Software Engineer (C++) - Platform (Linux/macOS) - Core/Game Engine

Lucky Robots
Australia · Full-time · Mid-Senior

Lucky Robots is building the world’s first "Game Engine for Robotics" - a real-time 3D simulation and training platform where AI learns to move, manipulate, and understand the physical world.

Our goal is to make large-scale robot training and testing environments accessible and fast.

If we're being honest, we're looking for someone who truly lives and breathes game engine development — someone ready to push beyond games and tackle everything from physics to rendering. The kind of person who thinks in data, asking, "if this robot in the sim were plugged into a computer with a USB cable, would the output be identical?" — and then makes it identical.

As an early engineer on this team, you’ll have the chance to shape the core architecture and design systems of the engine itself. We move quickly, experiment often, and value people who enjoy solving complex problems in a fast-paced, collaborative startup environment where ideas become reality fast.

We’re looking for an experienced C++ Software Engineer to join our Core Technology team, with a focus on platform support and engine infrastructure for Linux and macOS. You’ll help ensure our engine runs reliably, efficiently, and seamlessly across modern Unix-based platforms.

You probably know our CTO, The Cherno, Yan Chernikov who you will be reporting to at this position! Check out his post here: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/yan-chernikov_lucky-robots-linkedin-activity-7393972021304619008-3SNS

Responsibilities

As a Software Engineer on the Core team specializing in platform support, you will:

  • Develop and maintain core engine platform layers for Linux and macOS
  • Ensure the engine builds, runs, and performs consistently across supported Unix platforms
  • Work on low-level systems including threading, file systems, memory, windowing, and input
  • Improve portability and abstraction of platform-specific functionality
  • Own and enhance build and toolchain support (Clang/GCC, CMake/Premake, SDKs, package managers)
  • Debug complex platform-specific issues across graphics, audio, networking, and runtime systems
  • Collaborate with rendering, simulation, and engine teams to support cross-platform feature development and improve developer experience
  • Contribute to CI/CD pipelines and automated builds for Linux/macOS environments
  • Contribute to architectural discussions and share technical insights that shape the evolution of the engine

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent practical experience) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field
  • 5+ years of professional experience in modern C++ and solid understanding of software architecture
  • Strong experience developing software on Linux and/or macOS in production environments
  • Deep understanding of Unix fundamentals: processes, threading, synchronization, IPC, and system-level debugging
  • Experience working with platform toolchains and build systems (Clang, GCC, LLDB/GDB, CMake, Premake, etc.)
  • Proven experience developing high-performance, real-time, and multi-threaded systems
  • Experience with parallel programming and multi-threading, including synchronization, job systems, and data-oriented design
  • Experience working with or building game engines (e.g. Unreal, Unity, or proprietary/in-house engines)
  • Understanding of software development life cycle, software engineering methodologies and practices, and software quality assurance concepts

Bonus

  • Experience with graphics APIs (Vulkan, Direct3D 12, Metal, etc.) is a strong plus
  • Experience with C# and scripting systems
  • Experience developing simulation or robotics software
  • Contributions to open-source engine or graphics projects
  • Passion for AI, physics, or the intersection of robotics and interactive 3D environments
