The Leiden Learning and Innovation Centre is seeking an XR Developer to build and deploy projects in virtual, extended, and augmented reality. This role builds onprevious XR development work, but also extends to new projects in education. The XR Developer is a key member of the university’s XR Innovation Theme, is associated XR Special Interest Group (SIG), and will work closely with the XR Producer, XR Project Manager, and other members of the Educational Futures and Technology team to design and execute immersive experiences and infrastructure for education.
Main Responsibilities:
- Develop, maintain, and publish new and existing Extended Reality (XR) (AR/VR/MR) applications for Leiden faculties and external clients.
- Design and implement software for operating our virtual production studio, with a focus on integration of hardware and media equipment.
- Facilitate visits and demonstrations for the studio and XR projects.
- Participate and present LLInC's XR work in events within LU or other universities.
- Maintain technical communication with stakeholders and clients, gather requirements, provide solutions, and present deliverables.
- Collaborate with developers to maintain and improve both the general and XR-specific software development pipeline.
The Leiden Learning & Innovation Centre (LLInC) is the expertise centre of Leiden University dedicated to the continuous support and innovation of academic education across each of the seven faculties. Our central role makes us well connected to the university board, service departments, and other expertise centres, facilitating effective communication and collaboration. Striving to bridge the gap between educational vision and practical implementation, our multidisciplinary team of approximately 40 enthusiastic professionals works closely with lecturers to develop and implement tools and techniques to make learning ever more attractive, innovative, efficient, accessible, and inclusive. Moreover, we continuously research and advise on educational developments (including legal and privacy aspects), identify trends, create and process course evaluations, provide UTQ, CPD, and STQ trainings, and play our part in assisting the university to meet its educational quality assurance goals. Our way of working is collaborative and creative yet also structured. We are not afraid to experiment, challenge boundaries, and prioritise practical solutions which positively impact both society and our university.

- Experience in developing XR applications and providing XR interaction design solutions.
- Experience in game and application development using Unity 3D and other game engines.
- Proficiency in C# and other programming languages such as Python and JavaScript.
- Strong understanding of Git, continuous integration, and continuous deployment (CI/CD).
- Solid understanding of software architecture and design patterns, especially for real-time networked applications such as multiplayer games and XR applications.
- Familiarity with 3D modelling and media software to prepare assets for Unity.
- Ability to integrate new hardware and software with existing infrastructure of the studio.
- High level of autonomy and ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.
- Knowledge of app publishing to XR platforms such as Meta Horizon Store.
- Good communication skills, with the ability to explain technical choices, limitations, and timelines to non-technical collaborators.
- Ability to understand and translate educational objectives into concrete XR prototypes.

We also offer:
- An employment contract for the duration of one year with a view to permanent employment. This contract falls under the CLA of Dutch Universities;
- A salary between €4728 - €6433 gross per month, based on a full-time appointment (38 hours) (Schaal 11);
- A holiday allowance (8%), an end-of-year bonus (8,3%), and an attractive pension scheme at ABP;
- Full reimbursement of public transport commuting costs for home-to-work travel;
- Flexible working hours: as a standard, you are entitled to a minimum of 29 leave days on the basis of a full-time working week of 38 hours; you can also save for extra leave, for example by working 40 hours a week, and in this way accrue an extra 96 leave hours, or exchange 96 leave hours for a 36-hour week.
- Lots of options when it comes to secondary employment conditions; we can, for example, discuss options for a sabbatical or paid parental leave. Within our terms of employment individual choices model, you can exchange leave days and/or salary for benefits such as an advantageous sports subscription and bicycle scheme;
- If your work allows it, hybrid working is possible within the Netherlands;
- A home-working allowance (day and internet allowance) and attention for good workplaces. The University will also provide you with a laptop and a mobile telephone.
