We’re developing a stylized mobile game at Last Game and need a mid-level VFX artist to own the production of real-time visual effects and their integration in Unity. Your job will be to bring energy, personality, and “juice” to every hit, spell, and environmental effect, and ensure those effects run smoothly on mobile devices. A portfolio link is required; applications without a portfolio will not be considered.
Responsibilities
Visual Effects Creation
- Create stylized, real‑time VFX (ability, impact, ambient and environmental effects) that match our art direction and provide clear gameplay feedback. The person we hire should have a strong sense of timing and be able to “bring the juice” to player interactions.
- Use Unity’s Shuriken Particle System and Visual Effects Graph to build and fine‑tune particle systems; create custom shaders using Shader Graph or similar node‑based tools to achieve stylized looks.
- Author textures, sprite sheets and basic meshes needed for effects (e.g., smoke puffs, magic circles, hit flashes) and combine them with particles and shaders.
- Stay up to date with industry trends and new technologies in VFX and evaluate how they can improve our pipeline.
Integration & Optimization
- Integrate VFX assets into Unity, set up prefabs, events and triggers; work with designers and programmers to hook effects up using C# scripts.
- Maintain a clean, well‑organized asset library and folder hierarchy similar to how our 3D and 2D assets are managed.
- Optimize effects for mobile performance by monitoring CPU/GPU budgets, profiling and adjusting particle counts, draw calls and shader complexity.
Collaboration
- Work closely with animators, 3D artists and developers to ensure effects complement characters, animations and gameplay.
- Attend regular reviews to show work in progress, receive feedback and iterate.
- Communicate technical needs and limitations clearly to programmers and designers.
- Mentor junior artists when needed and contribute to building a cohesive VFX style.
Requirements
- Demonstrable experience creating and integrating real‑time VFX in Unity for games; a track record of delivering VFX across console or mobile platforms.
- Proficiency with Unity’s Shuriken and VFX Graph, plus hands‑on experience creating custom materials with Shader Graph or similar tools.
- Working knowledge of C# sufficient to trigger and control VFX in game code.
- Understanding of CPU/GPU performance profiling and optimization, especially for mobile devices.
- Ability to self‑organize, prioritize work and meet deadlines.
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset; comfortable giving and receiving feedback and working closely with multidisciplinary teams.
- Solid art fundamentals (color, composition, light) and an understanding of how natural phenomena like water, fire and smoke behave.
- A portfolio demonstrating mid‑level VFX work; mid+ applicants only.
Nice to Have
- Passion for stylized mobile games (e.g., Supercell art style – Clash of Clans, Clash Royale).
- Ability to create simple 3D models or hand‑painted textures when needed, or familiarity with rigging and animation.
- Experience with performance optimization for low‑end devices and awareness of memory constraints.
- Knowledge of physics‑based simulations or advanced compositing, such as destructible objects, fluids or procedural effects.
Benefits
- A great office environment, working with a senior team in the game industry.
- Performance‑based bonuses for successful projects.
- Easy‑to‑reach office location.
- Private events and training opportunities.
Application Process
Please submit your CV and portfolio highlighting relevant VFX work. Applications without a portfolio will not be considered. Qualified candidates will be contacted for an interview and may be asked to complete a VFX test.
