Job Description

Location

The product team highly values in-person interactions to foster a culture of collaboration, and it provides the opportunity for the team to build strong relationships. The successful candidate for this role should be able to work from either the Sydney office or Melbourne office (our product team comes to the office at least one day per week).

a Little About Us

When it comes to food experience, me&u helps you always feel like a local. The company’s vision is to bring that feeling to everyone, anywhere - so no matter what neighbourhood you live in or visit, you’ll always know the perfect place to go and exactly what to order.

me&u is used by 6000+ bars, pubs, and restaurants to create memorable guest experiences and grow their brands. With 200 staff in five countries, and headquartered in Melbourne, Australia, me&u is the consolidation of two leading hospitality technology companies: Mr Yum and me&u, who merged in November 2023.

About The Role

Help shape the future of hospitality by designing products that venues and guests genuinely love.

Working as part of a cross-functional stream alongside a product manager, engineering manager, engineers, and go to market experts you'll own design quality from start to finish. From early discovery through to polished, production-ready experiences, you'll shape the problem, validate the direction, and drive the outcome.

We care about taste. We care about craft. We want designers who obsess over the details that make an interface feel right. You care about the micro-interaction, the hierarchy, the moment of delight and zoom out to connect those details to real commercial outcomes.

You won't just push pixels in Figma. You'll build prototypes to prove ideas, pair with engineers to ship them, and use AI to move faster and go further than traditional design workflows allow. If you're the kind of designer who's already experimenting with AI to generate UI, write code, or accelerate your creative process, you'll thrive here.

What You'll Do

Own design within your stream

  • This is your stream. You'll lead design end-to-end, from messy problem space through to shipped product, with real ownership of how the experience comes together.
  • Think in systems, not just screens. You'll consider how your choices ripple across surfaces, user types, and technical implementation, and adapt as you learn.
  • Set the standard for quality and taste. You'll be the person who catches what others miss, whether it is the inconsistency, the awkward flow, the missed opportunity for delight, raising the bar for the whole team.

Discovery and validation

  • Get close to the problem. You'll lead discovery, leveraging interviews, usability testing, and ideation sessions to understand what customers actually need, not just what's been assumed.
  • Turn insight into direction. Synthesise qualitative and quantitative data to spot patterns, challenge assumptions, and shape the scope that guides what gets built.
  • Form a point of view. We don't want designers who wait for a brief. You'll have the freedom and the expectation to advocate for what's right for the customer and the business.

Craft, prototyping, and taste

  • This is a role for someone who cares deeply about how things look and how they feel. You'll design beautiful, scalable interfaces where accessibility and inclusivity are the default and every detail is intentional.
  • Sweat the details: continuity across states, devices, and contexts; hierarchy, typography, colour, and motion; UX copy that guides without getting in the way.
  • Go beyond static mocks. Build interactive prototypes to test ideas, communicate intent, and prove concepts before a line of production code is written. The best way to show an idea is to make it real.

Cross-functional collaboration

  • Share your work early and often. You'll be part of a culture that values openness with design reviews, pairing sessions, and stream rituals being where progress and great decisions happen.
  • Build trust across the stream by bringing different perspectives together, from customer needs to technical constraints and business goals with a focus on designing toward shared outcomes.
  • You'll have a voice in planning and prioritisation, helping your stream focus on the work that matters most.
  • Work collaboratively with engineers with fast feedback loops and a focus on what ships, not just what's in Figma.

Build with AI

  • We are building AI products and building with AI and we want designers who are at the frontier of both.
  • You'll use AI as a creative multiplier: generating concepts, prototyping faster, writing and iterating on UX copy, exploring visual directions, and pushing the boundaries of what a designer can ship independently.
  • We believe the best product designers may soon build entire frontend interfaces with AI. You don't need to be there yet, but you should be heading in that direction and excited about the journey.
  • When designing AI-powered product experiences, you'll think carefully about trust, clarity, and ethics. Great AI experiences feel helpful, not creepy.

What You'll Bring

Must-haves

  • 4+ years of product design experience, with a track record of leading design end-to-end within a cross-functional team.
  • Great visual design taste. Your portfolio shows a clear point of view on what good looks and feels like. You have strong opinions about craft and the skill to back them up.
  • You think in systems: how solutions scale across flows, user segments, and surfaces, and you adjust your approach as context evolves.
  • You prototype, not just design. You express ideas through interactive prototypes and use whatever tools get the idea across e.g Figma, code, AI-generated UI, or a combination.
  • You've run your own discovery. You translate qualitative and quantitative insights into design decisions that deliver real customer and commercial impact.
  • You love working with engineers. You think through states, edge cases, and behaviours so the team ships with confidence.
  • You're already using and excited about using AI in your design process to generate ideas, iterate faster, write copy, or build.
  • You communicate with clarity and care: explaining rationale, facilitating critique, and adjusting your style from development pairing to leadership presentations.
  • You have a growth mindset and genuinely enjoy helping others grow.

Strong preferences

  • Experience in B2B SaaS, ideally with B2C or marketplace exposure.
  • Experience contributing to a design system at scale.
  • Comfort with code, even lightweight frontend skills or an appetite to learn, is a genuine plus.
  • Background at a recognised Australian or international scale-up with a reputation for strong product and design culture.
  • A connection to or curiosity about hospitality.
