Corning Scientific Center in Helsinki operates as a critical part of the Modeling & Computing Technologies group that services Corning’s global RD&E organization. We work closely with experimentalist partners around the globe to apply modeling capabilities to increase the pace of Corning’s innovation in addition to collaborating internally with business and across Research, Development, Engineering, and commercial technology.


As an intern, you will work closely with a dedicated team of over 40 scientists based at our office, Helsinki/Salmisaari. Together, you will support our global customers, from laboratories to production facilities, by innovating and optimizing our products and processes.


Scope of Position:

The successful candidate will:


  • Work on optical DSP algorithms, including channel equalization, under supervision of experienced colleagues
  • Contribute to the development of optical communication simulator
  • Other tasks may be assigned based on qualification and experience

Required Education and Experience:

  • BS / MS / PhD student in Science/Engineering/Math

What we’re looking for:


  • Proficiency in MATLAB, Python and C\C++.
  • Good understanding of digital signal processing (Fourier transform, convolution, filtering, adaptive filters).
  • Good mathematical knowledge, such as calculus, differential equations, linear algebra, and probability theory.
  • Experience with version control systems (preferably Git).
  • English level (both speaking and writing) sufficient for comfortable communication in international environment (working language is English).


One of the following additional areas will be an advantage to this intern position:

  • Completed courses in optical communications and fiber optics.
  • Understanding optical channel modeling.
  • Understanding modulation and demodulation in coherent optical systems.
  • Understanding spatial multiplexing (MIMO) systems is a big advantage.
  • Code development in Linux environment.
  • Experience with machine learning frameworks (Tensforflow, PyTorch).

The Corning Scientific Center internship is paid and exceeds the minimum salary defined by the universities. The internship typically lasts 3 months and generally starts in June. However, the exact start date is flexible and can be discussed with the hiring team.
