Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Senior Android Applications Developer to design, build, and maintain mission-critical Android applications supporting public-safety communication, situational awareness, and operational data systems. These applications are used by emergency responders and must operate reliably in demanding field environments with intermittent connectivity, device integrations, and high availability requirements.
The successful candidate will collaborate with product management, UI/UX, backend platform teams, and device integration teams to deliver secure, resilient, and performance-optimized applications, while driving engineering excellence, architectural consistency, and technical mentorship across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and maintain mission-critical Android applications using Kotlin-first development practices.
- Implement resilient, offline-capable, and fault-tolerant mobile solutions capable of operating in low-connectivity or degraded network environments.
- Build modern Android user interfaces using Jetpack Compose while ensuring usability in high-stress operational workflows.
- Implement scalable, modular architectures (e.g., MVVM, Clean Architecture, modularization) supporting large multi-feature applications.
- Integrate with backend systems, real-time messaging platforms, and device services using REST, streaming, and event-driven APIs.
- Develop and maintain integrations with Bluetooth, radio communication interfaces, sensors, GPS/location, and background services.
- Optimize applications for performance, battery efficiency, and reliability under continuous operational use.
- Implement secure communication, authentication, and data-protection mechanisms aligned with enterprise and public-safety security requirements.
- Contribute to automated testing, reliability validation, and release quality gates including unit, integration, and instrumentation testing.
- Support CI/CD pipelines, release automation, and operational monitoring of deployed mobile applications.
- Participate in technical design reviews, mentor engineers, and promote engineering best practices across teams.
- Diagnose field issues, perform root-cause analysis, and implement durable fixes for production deployments.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
- Strong experience developing production Android applications using Kotlin and the Android SDK.
- Experience designing high-reliability, enterprise, or mission-critical mobile applications.
- Experience with modern Android UI development using Jetpack Compose.
- Strong knowledge of Android architecture components (ViewModel, Navigation, Lifecycle, WorkManager).
- Experience implementing offline-first data synchronization, caching, and conflict-handling strategies.
- Experience working with Bluetooth, device integrations, background processing, or hardware-adjacent APIs.
- Experience with networking frameworks such as Retrofit, OkHttp, or Ktor.
- Strong debugging, performance optimization, and secure coding practices.
- Experience working with Git-based development workflows.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills within cross-functional engineering environments.
- Experience working on public safety, communications, defense, or highly regulated enterprise mobile platforms.
- Experience integrating with radio communication systems, push-to-talk, messaging, or real-time communication frameworks.
- Experience implementing secure mobile architectures including certificate-based authentication, encrypted storage, and hardened builds.
- Experience with dependency injection frameworks (Hilt/Dagger).
- Familiarity with modular Android architectures for large-scale applications.
- Experience mentoring engineers and leading technical initiatives.
- Experience working in Agile/Scrum delivery environments supporting multi-team product releases.
- Familiarity with Kotlin Multiplatform (KMP) for sharing business logic across mobile or cross-platform applications.
- Familiarity with Compose Multiplatform for building shared UI components across Android and other supported platforms.
- Experience with Firebase, observability platforms, or operational telemetry tooling.
