About The Role

We are seeking a skilled Front End Developer to join DWP’s dynamic digital team. In this role, you will be instrumental in shaping the digital interfaces used by millions of UK citizens every day. Your primary responsibility will be to develop fast, accessible, and user-centric front-end applications that support the department’s core services, including Universal Credit and other vital Working Age Services. You will collaborate closely with designers, backend developers, and product managers to translate complex policies and user needs into intuitive digital journeys. Your expertise in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, TypeScript, and modern front-end frameworks will be vital in creating scalable, reliable, and high-performance interfaces. Additionally, you will be involved in integrating front-end components with backend systems, APIs, and microservices deployed on cloud platforms like AWS or Azure, ensuring seamless and secure service delivery. Qualifications

  • Extensive experience and detailed working knowledge of open-source technologies, including HTML, CSS, client and server-side JavaScript, TypeScript, Node.js, and modern front-end frameworks.
  • Proven ability to develop accessible and performant user interfaces across various devices and browsers, ensuring a consistent user experience.
  • Experience in delivering comprehensive unit testing using frameworks such as Jest or Mocha to maintain high code quality and reliability.
  • Experience integrating front-end applications with diverse technical systems, including SQL or NoSQL databases, caching tools like Redis, and API microservices within cloud environments such as AWS or Azure.
  • Strong team collaboration skills, with a history of translating complex concepts into user-friendly digital solutions.
  • Significant expertise in developing large-scale front-end systems handling high user loads, transactions, and complex business processes.
  • This role requires SC Clearance, reflecting the sensitive nature of the work involved.

Responsibilities

As a Front End Developer at DWP, your primary responsibility will be to design, develop, and maintain accessible and high-performance user interfaces for critical government services. You will work closely with cross-disciplinary teams to translate policies and user requirements into intuitive digital experiences, ensuring they are accessible to all users regardless of their circumstances. Your role will involve writing clean, maintainable, and well-tested code, employing methodologies like Test-Driven Development (TDD) and utilizing testing frameworks such as Jest or Mocha to ensure service reliability and quality.

You will be responsible for integrating front-end components with backend APIs, microservices, and cloud infrastructure, contributing to smooth deployment pipelines and secure service delivery. Monitoring and optimizing application performance across different devices and browsers will be key to delivering a consistent user experience. Additionally, you will participate in code reviews, contribute to technical documentation, and support the continuous improvement of development processes. Your work will directly impact the efficiency and accessibility of vital government services used by millions of UK citizens daily.
