About The Role

We are seeking a skilled Front End Developer to join DWP’s dynamic digital team. In this role, you will be instrumental in shaping the user experience of our Working Age Services, which include flagship programs like Universal Credit. Your primary responsibility will be to develop and enhance accessible, high-performance interfaces that are used daily by millions of UK citizens. You will collaborate closely with designers, backend developers, product managers, and stakeholders to translate complex policies and user needs into intuitive digital journeys. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in front-end technologies, a passion for creating inclusive digital solutions, and experience working on large-scale systems with high user engagement. Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess a comprehensive understanding of modern web development tools and practices, including:

  • Extensive experience with open-source technologies such as HTML, CSS, client and server-side JavaScript, and TypeScript.
  • Proficiency in modern front-end frameworks and templating languages, with a focus on accessibility and performance across diverse devices and browsers.
  • Strong experience in developing accessible user interfaces that cater to users with varying needs and circumstances.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement thorough unit testing using frameworks like Jest or Mocha to ensure code quality and reliability.
  • Experience integrating front-end components with backend systems, including database technologies (SQL or NoSQL), caching solutions like Redis, and API microservices, particularly within cloud environments such as AWS or Azure.
  • Proven track record of working effectively within multidisciplinary teams to deliver user-centered digital services.
  • Significant experience in developing large-scale front-end systems handling high transaction volumes and user concurrency.

This role also requires candidates to hold Security Clearance (SC), reflecting the sensitive nature of the work involved.

Responsibilities

As a Front End Developer at DWP, your core responsibilities will include:

  • Designing, developing, and maintaining accessible, high-performance user interfaces for digital services used by millions of UK citizens.
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams, including designers, backend developers, and product managers, to translate complex policies into simple, effective digital solutions.
  • Writing clean, modular, and well-tested code using best practices such as Test-Driven Development (TDD) and frameworks like Jest or Mocha.
  • Integrating front-end components with APIs, microservices, and cloud platforms to ensure seamless data flow and service reliability.
  • Participating in code reviews, peer testing, and continuous improvement initiatives to uphold high standards of quality and security.
  • Contributing to the deployment and maintenance of cloud-based infrastructure, ensuring services are scalable, secure, and resilient.
  • Staying up-to-date with emerging front-end technologies and industry best practices to continually enhance digital services.
