Reporting to: Engineering Manager
The Role
We are on a mission to be “the app you can’t move without.” Since launching in 2000 with a vision to make home‑hunting happy, we have grown into the biggest property app and website in the UK — with over 1 million Android users every month.
We are seeking a highly skilled, product‑minded Senior Android Engineer to join our mobile team. In this role, you will play a key part in delivering high‑impact, user‑centric mobile experiences that help millions of home‑movers every month.
You will collaborate closely with cross‑functional partners in Product Management, Design, Backend Engineering, and Analytics to bring ideas to life. As a Senior Engineer, you will contribute hands‑on to the codebase, take ownership of complex features, mentor others, and help shape engineering best practices across the team.
Responsibilities Include
- Product Collaboration: Work closely with product managers and designers from the earliest stages of discovery, shaping solutions with user needs and product strategy in mind.
- End‑to‑End Ownership: Lead the delivery lifecycle for key features — from concept to production — ensuring a seamless experience for Android users.
- Technical Excellence: Architect, design, and implement modern, high‑performance Android applications using Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, Coroutines, and Clean Architecture principles.
- User‑Focused Solutions: Advocate for users across the entire mobile journey, ensuring new features are intuitive, accessible, and delightful.
- Mentorship: Provide technical guidance, pair programming, and thoughtful code reviews to upskill mid‑level and junior engineers.
- Data‑Driven Iteration: Partner with analytics to understand user behaviour, experiment with improvements, and iterate on features post‑launch.
- Quality & Performance: Maintain a scalable, maintainable, and efficient codebase through strong engineering practices including TDD, CI/CD, and automated UI/testing frameworks.
- Experience: Has 5+ years of experience building and shipping high‑quality Android applications using Kotlin.
- Product Mindset: Understands product goals and can translate business problems into technical solutions that resonate with users.
- Technical Expertise: Proficient in Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, ViewModel, Hilt, Coroutines (including Flows), Room, and modern Android architectural patterns.
- Collaborative Skills: Comfortable working within cross‑functional squads and contributing to shared outcomes.
- Data‑Informed Decision‑Making: Familiar with mobile analytics and A/B testing, and proactive in using data to drive iteration.
- Performance Optimisation: Experienced in measuring and optimising app performance, stability, and responsiveness across a diverse Android device ecosystem.
- Mentorship & Leadership: Confident mentoring and supporting others to raise the engineering bar.
- Experience working with Firebase (Crashlytics, Remote Config, A/B Testing)
- Knowledge of performance and network debugging tools
- Exposure to mobile release processes and CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, Gradle optimisations)
- Understanding of accessibility best practices for Android
- Experience with micro‑frontends, modularisation, or multi‑module Android architectures
