Most .NET roles are CRUD applications with a database and a front end. This one processes in the range of 100 million sensor events per day in real time. Sensors send data every two seconds. The platform processes it and outputs results in seconds.
The volume is growing as more customers move to live integrations with smart buildings and live displays, and you'd be joining the team that built it and playing a key part in what comes next.
What You'd Be Working On
XY Sense makes privacy preserving occupancy sensors for commercial buildings. The sensors use on-device AI inference to help customers understand how their office space is being used, reduce energy waste, and make better decisions about their buildings. Images never leave the sensor. Only anonymous data is transmitted.
The cloud platform you'd be working on is the system that ingests, processes, and delivers all of that data in real time. The front end turns all of that sensor data into real-time dashboards, heatmaps, and spatial analytics that customers use to make decisions.
The back end is .NET and C# running on AWS with Lambda, IoT services, Redis and real-time data pipelines in the mix. The front end is React and TypeScript that talks to APIs for everything. You'd work across both.
The Platform
You'd have outsized impact and autonomy. At XY Sense, engineers lead technical projects end to end. What you build goes directly into the hands of enterprise customers like CBRE, Xero, and Fidelity. You own features from figuring out the approach through to shipping it.
The engineering problems are genuinely interesting. This is real-time serverless processing at scale, not request/response web applications. The product spans hardware and software under one roof, and you'd be working with a wider team of around 20 people across software engineering, data, product management, and the embedded engineering team that develops the sensors in house.
The founders built and exited Serraview, a workplace management platform before starting XY Sense, and the team has strong tenure and deep experience in the space.
Why now
XY Sense is growing at over 250% annually, now operating across 27 countries with $20M USD in funding from investors including Blackbird Ventures. They're expanding into the UK, Europe, India, and the Middle East, and new enterprise customers are driving demand for live integrations and new platform capabilities. That growth is why this role exists.
The work
- Building and extending back end services in C# and .NET. APIs, data processing pipelines, real-time event handling
- Building and shipping front end features in React and TypeScript. Dashboards, visualisations, and the interfaces customers use every day
- Owning projects. Seniors at XY Sense run their own features. You pull in stakeholders, make scope decisions, push back when effort and value don't line up, and ship
- Using AI coding tools as a genuine part of your workflow. XY Sense runs cutting-edge tooling and holds the bar high on quality and security. The two aren't in conflict here, they're expected together
Who this is for
- Strong .NET and C# experience. This is the core of the back end. ASP.NET, Entity Framework, building APIs and services. Any recent .NET version is fine
- Solid React and TypeScript skills. You don't need to be a front end specialist, but you can build and ship UI when the work calls for it
- AWS experience. Lambdas, serverless architecture, cloud infrastructure. If you've worked with real-time data pipelines or IoT services, even better
- You're already using AI coding tools as a core part of how you work and want to keep pushing in that direction. This is an environment that takes that seriously and expects it
- You've shipped production software. You understand what it takes to keep things running for real customers
- You communicate well, bring people along, and explain your thinking. Seniors here own projects and that means bringing stakeholders with you
- You're pragmatic about process. Some things aren't mature yet. You'll help build them, not wait for them to arrive
- Kubernetes and Docker experience would be a genuine bonus
Benefits
- Ongoing, full time role
- Competitive salary based on experience
- ESOP offered
Great offices in the Melbourne CBD, hybrid setup, and a team that genuinely enjoys working alongside each other.
