Airport IT Network Engineer
Examples of Duties
Troubleshoots, repairs, and implements complex information technology solutions. This includes support for system architecture, hardware, software, operating systems, distributed computing, data analysis, facilities planning, resource management, programming, system performance, communications, and networking. Understands, designs, develops, tests, selects, implements, manages, and enhances a total integrated system. Installs, configures, and maintains City of Cleveland's communications network. Manages all LAN/WAN related additions and changes at the PC level. Provides NT domain administration, back-up operations, and network support. Plans and implements the overall strategic goals of the City of Cleveland's network systems. Serves as technical lead in the design of domain and network architecture. Leads in the design, development, installation and testing of communication systems citywide. Provides consultation and customer service to the users of data and telecommunications network services and systems. Runs diagnostics and assists in the deployment of network backbone to include network switching systems, servers, routers, and departmental data and telephone systems. Consults with network operation staff and service providers to facilitate problem resolution within the City of Cleveland infrastructure. Identifies existing and emerging technologies and evaluates applicability. Maintains accurate records of all maintenance, inventory, and security measures associated with voice and data networks. Performs other job-related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Associate’s Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Networking, or related field from an accredited college, university, or vocational school required, Bachelor’s Degree is preferred. Three years of full-time paid experience in IT/IS, two of which are in support of users in a Windows environment, required. (Substitution: A certification in computer networking or two years of full-time paid relevant experience may substitute for the Associate’s Degree.) Must have experience that demonstrates a knowledge and understanding of local area networks (LAN), metropolitan area networks (MAN), Wide area networks (WAN), Cisco Networking, TCP/IP, Routers, Switches as well as Windows and PC client-server or web-based systems. Network certification (e.g.: CCNA, CCDA, CCNP, CCDP) is highly desired. Strong communication, documentation ability, leadership, and organizational skills are needed. Must be able to lift and carry a minimum of thirty pounds. Valid State of Ohio Driver’s License required.

- Must successfully complete a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) 10-year fingerprint-based Criminal History Records Check, employment background check, and Security Threat Assessment.
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical and drug test.
- Must be able to lift and carry a minimum of thirty-five (35) pounds.
- Must be proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and PowerPoint.
- Availability for on-call support and occasional after-hours work for critical system maintenance.
- Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Networking, Information Technology, Computer Science, or a closely related field.
- Certifications:
- Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) or Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) required.
- CompTIA Network+ or Security+ (plus).
- ITIL Foundation (plus).
- Technical Skills:
- Advanced knowledge of LAN/WAN design, routing, and switching (Cisco preferred).
- Experience with firewalls, VPNs, and network security appliances (Cisco ASA, Palo Alto, Fortinet FortiGate, or similar).
- Proficiency in wireless networking (Wi-Fi design, controllers, access points).
- Familiarity with network monitoring tools (SolarWinds, PRTG, or similar).
- Understanding of VoIP, QoS, and VLAN segmentation.
- Knowledge of airport-specific systems (AODB, CUPPS/CUTE, CCTV, Access Control) and their network dependencies.

The IT Network Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the airport’s network infrastructure to ensure secure, reliable, and high-performance connectivity for critical systems. This role supports wired and wireless networks, firewalls, VPNs, and network security measures in compliance with TSA and industry standards. The Network Engineer works closely with IT teams, cybersecurity, and airport operations to deliver resilient network services for passenger processing, operational systems, and administrative functions.
- Network Design & Implementation
- Design and deploy network infrastructure to support airport operations and passenger systems.
- Configure routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless controllers for optimal performance and security.
- Operational Excellence
- Monitor network performance and availability; implement proactive measures to prevent outages.
- Maintain accurate network diagrams, IP address management, and configuration documentation.
- Security Assurance
- Implement and maintain network security policies, including firewall rules, VPN configurations, and intrusion prevention systems.
- Ensure compliance with TSA and industry security standards.
- Performance Optimization
- Analyze traffic patterns and optimize bandwidth utilization for critical airport systems.
- Apply QoS policies for voice and operational traffic.
- Technical Support & Troubleshooting
- Provide Tier 3 support for network-related incidents and escalations.
- Coordinate with vendors for hardware/software issues and firmware updates.

- Participate in disaster recovery planning and testing for network components
- Support integration of new airport systems and technologies.
- Perform other related duties as required.
