About Rivian

Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.

As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.

Role Summary

As an intern, you won't just be "shadowing"—you will be contributing to the core services that power millions of trips. Because we are open with projects, you’ll have the opportunity to dive into areas that suit you best, whether that’s electric vehicle modeling, real-time data handling, navigation app development, or cloud architecture.

Responsibilities

You will work alongside our senior engineers on projects that could include:

  • API Development: Building and refining both general and "Backend-for-Frontend" APIs that handle telemetry and charger data.
  • Event-Driven Systems: Working with NATS/JetStream and Protobuf to manage high-speed data flows.
  • Data Reliability: Developing automated tests and CI/CD pipelines to ensure our services stay performant and resilient.
  • Navigation app development: We work on both the ABetterRouteplanner stand-alone app as well as the RVT in-car Android navigation app - and you could be too.
  • Collaborative Innovation: Participating in code reviews and architectural discussions, bringing a fresh perspective to our technical challenges.

Qualifications

We are looking for curious, driven students who love solving complex logic puzzles.

  • Education: Currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Programming Proficiency: You have a solid foundation and hands-on skills in one or more programming languages, be it Kotlin, Python, Typescript, Golang, Rust or C++.
  • Architectural Curiosity: You are interested in how distributed systems work—how data moves from a car’s telemetry to a user's screen in milliseconds.
  • Problem Solver: You enjoy breaking down big problems into manageable pieces and aren't afraid to ask "why" or "how can we make this better?"
  • Team Player: You have an open, growth-oriented mindset and enjoy collaborating with others to reach a goal.
