I'm looking for a software engineer to join our marketing team. Here's a little background, examples of the things that you might work on, and things you probably want to know.
Background & reason for hiring
Having an engineer in the marketing team has been part of our secret sauce for the past 2-3 years. The role isn't new, but our current engineer (Silver Taza) is moving onto new pastures soon. We're looking for someone to fill his (rather large) shoes.
Scope of the role & example projects
90% of your time will be spent in the Discoverability team, working with Usman.
For context, our marketing team is split into three (Brand, Product Marketing, Discoverability).
"Discoverability" includes all the initiatives that help Modash get found when people search for stuff. Mostly SEO & LLM visibility.
Here are three examples of what we have built via engineering for SEO purposes.
- Programmatic projects
- /find-influencers/ → lists of influencers in particular cities, countries, niches, or combinations.
- https://www.modash.io/find-influencers/germany/micro
- https://www.modash.io/find-influencers/united-states/cooking
- /content-library/ → a variety of different list/example pages.
- Influencer collaborations in a certain ecommerce category, like this
- Influencers that have worked with a particular brand, like this
- Influencer marketing examples in certain countries, like this
These are exactly as they sound: free tools for specific, small use cases. Examples:
- Fake follower checker
- Engagement rate calculator
- Free influencer search tool
- Automatic AI content translations
For example, this English article has alternative language versions like these that capture additional search traffic:
- https://www.modash.io/fr/blog/influencer-outreach
- https://www.modash.io/es/blog/influencer-outreach
- Implementing a system that checks user location via IP, in order to display the correct currency on our website pricing page.
- Building an AI qualification tool the checks & categorizes the user's company (using email domain) before allowing them to book time with our sales team.
The stack is Vite + Vue, deployed to S3 via AWS.
From Silver's perspective, these are some of the technical challenges that you'll need to solve:
- Build and deployment speed at scale. Some projects generate over 10,000 statically built pages. A naive full rebuild could take 40+ hours. The role requires designing smart incremental build and deployment strategies that keep pages up to date without unacceptable build times
- Infrastructure breadth. There are already :15+ different tools/projects to understand and maintain, each with its own nuances. You'll need to be familiar with all of them in order to be fast in making updates & fixes
- Memory constraints. Everything needs to be built in a way that doesn't exceed memory limits during build or runtime. This requires thoughtful architecture decisions
Required skills and experience
- Strong software engineering fundamentals, including system design
- Experience with Vue or React (or willingness to get up to speed fast)
- Comfortable with AWS (S3 deployments, infrastructure)
- Ability to ship fast and often. You'll need to be good at finding the right project scope so you can deliver value without getting stuck in over-engineering
- Ability to communicate well in plain English (us marketers aren't idiots, but we aren't engineers either)
- Willingness to learn whatever the problem/opportunity requires. This role will be varied!
- Ability to think like a founder. Past experience building your own stuff in the context of business or marketing is a bonus!
- Experience with programmatic SEO
- Familiarity with Webflow (our programmatic work is not on Webflow, but our main website is)
- Familiarity with large-scale static site builds and incremental deployment patterns
What we're offering
- Flexible working hours. We trust you to do your job, without anyone looking over your shoulder
- Unlimited paid vacation time. If you're happy & well-rested, you'll do better work. Take the time you need to enjoy a balanced life
- Fully remote working. As long as you have a reliable internet connection, we want you to work wherever is best for you. At home, in a café, on a beach. Whatever works
- Personal development. When you grow, we benefit. If there's a course, book, or conference that will help you upskill - we'll cover it
- Ownership. You're the expert at what you do, and so you should have the flexibility to make decisions and take action quickly. No unnecessary red tape. Got an out-of-the-box idea? You'll have the autonomy to go ahead and try things that you might not be able to at other companies
