Job Purpose
The Network Engineer is responsible for the end-to-end support, maintenance, monitoring, and administration of the organization’s network infrastructure. This includes ISP connectivity, WAN, LAN, routers, firewalls, core switches, access switches, wireless networks, and endpoint network configurations.
The role ensures the network environment remains secure, available, and fully operational through proactive monitoring, incident resolution, routine maintenance, vendor coordination, and proper documentation.
Candidates with exposure to server operations, particularly patch management and backup management, will have an added advantage.
Key Responsibilities
Network Operations and Support
- Manage and support the organization’s end-to-end network infrastructure, including ISP, WAN, LAN, routers, firewalls, core switches, access switches, Wi-Fi, and endpoint network configurations.
- Ensure network availability, reliability, and performance across all supported environments.
- Monitor the network environment on a 24x7 basis using SolarWinds or equivalent monitoring tools.
- Respond to and resolve critical incidents on a 24x7 basis, and non-critical incidents during business support hours.
- Troubleshoot and resolve network faults, connectivity issues, and performance-related problems.
Network Administration and Change Management
- Perform minor network changes, including:
- VLAN creation, modification, and removal
- Firewall rule changes
- Switch configuration updates
- Wireless access point configuration
- Maintain secure and standardized network configurations.
- Perform regular firmware upgrades, patching, and configuration backups for network devices.
- Support ongoing improvements to network security, stability, and operational efficiency.
Vendor and Asset Management
- Act as the primary technical point of contact for external vendors and service providers.
- Liaise with third-party vendors and other related partners for issue escalation and resolution.
- Coordinate repairs, RMAs, equipment provisioning, and replacement activities.
- Maintain accurate inventory and asset records in the organization’s asset management or CMDB platform.
Documentation
- Prepare and maintain up-to-date network documentation, including:
- L2/L3 network diagrams
- Administrative guides
- Configuration guides
- Standard operating procedures
- Ensure all network changes and technical documentation are properly recorded and maintained.
Nice-to-Have Responsibilities in Server Engineering
Patch Management
- Perform monthly patch reviews and scheduled patching activities.
- Verify backups before patch implementation.
- Apply patches, validate successful deployment, and confirm system stability.
- Ensure critical patches are applied within defined timelines.
- Support rollback activities where patching issues arise.
Backup Management
- Perform daily backup health checks and restart failed jobs where required.
- Conduct periodic restoration tests for files and servers to validate backup integrity.
- Monitor backup storage utilization and raise alerts when thresholds are reached.
- Support backup administration using tools such as Druva Phoenix.
Qualifications
Education
- Diploma or Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Network Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in network engineering, network administration, or infrastructure support.
- Experience in managing enterprise network environments.
- Hands-on experience with incident resolution, network monitoring, change implementation, and vendor coordination.
- Exposure to server patching and backup management is an advantage.
- Strong knowledge of TCP/IP, subnetting, routing, and switching.
- Hands-on experience with routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless access points.
- Knowledge of VLANs, ACLs, firewall policies, VPNs, and LAN/WAN technologies.
- Experience with network monitoring and alerting tools such as SolarWinds.
- Familiarity with firmware upgrades, configuration backups, and network documentation.
- Working knowledge of CMDB / asset management systems.
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
- Good communication and vendor management ability.
- Strong documentation and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage priorities effectively.
- Strong sense of accountability and ownership.
Preferred Certifications
- Relevant networking certifications are preferred.
- Certifications in the following would be highly desirable:
- Aruba Certified
- Sophos Certified
Other relevant certifications that would be beneficial:
- CCNA / CCNP
- Network+
- Firewall or security-related vendor certifications
