About the Role: Technical Scrum Master

As a Technical Scrum Master, you will facilitate Agile delivery within cloud and engineering teams, ensuring high-quality, secure, and predictable delivery of AWS, DevOps, and platform initiatives. Working closely with the Technical Delivery Manager, Product Owners, architects, and DevOps engineers, you will combine strong Scrum facilitation with sufficient technical depth to understand engineering challenges, remove complex impediments, and optimise delivery flow.

You will play a key role within one of the UK’s most high-profile digital transformation programmes, supporting the stability and modernisation of critical national infrastructure. This role requires a strong understanding of cloud-native delivery, CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, and operational readiness in regulated environments.

Unlike a traditional Scrum Master, you will actively engage in technical discussions, understand architectural dependencies, and help drive engineering excellence across cloud and DevOps teams

.Key Responsibilities:

  • Support predictable delivery of AWS infrastructure, automation, and CI/CD initiatives.
  • Remove complex technical impediments impacting engineering teams.
  • Collaborate with the Technical Delivery Manager to manage sprint-level risks and cross-team dependencies.
  • Work closely with engineers to improve flow across CI/CD pipelines and deployment processes.
  • Promote engineering best practices including Infrastructure as Code, automated testing, code reviews, and Dev SecOps principles.
  • Monitor delivery metrics such as velocity, cycle time, deployment frequency, lead time for change, and defect rates.
  • Support backlog refinement with a strong understanding of technical enablers and architectural dependencies.
  • Encourage operational readiness throughout delivery, including documentation, monitoring, and support model considerations.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and technical excellence.
  • Escalate systemic delivery risks to the Technical Delivery Manager with clear impact analysis.
  • Support incident learning reviews and promote “shift-left” quality practices.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • 5+ years’ experience as a Scrum Master within cloud, DevOps, or platform engineering environments.
  • Strong understanding of AWS services (e.g., EC2, IAM, VPC, S3, Lambda, CloudWatch) and cloud operating models.
  • Experience working with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, or CDK).
  • Familiarity with CI/CD tooling (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, AWS CodePipeline, Bitbucket).
  • Understanding of containerisation and orchestration (Docker, ECS, EKS).
  • Experience working within regulated or government delivery environments.
  • Proficient in Jira and Confluence for Agile tracking and reporting.
  • Strong understanding of DevOps metrics (DORA metrics, deployment frequency, MTTR).
  • Experience managing technical dependencies and delivery risks in complex environments.
  • Exposure to incident, change, and problem management in live cloud environments.
  • Strong facilitation, stakeholder communication, and conflict resolution skills.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Certified Scrum Master (CSM) or Professional Scrum Master (PSM)
  • SAFe Scrum Master or SAFe Agilist
  • AWS Cloud Practitioner or Associate certification
  • ITIL v4 Foundation
  • Experience working in SC-cleared delivery environments

What We Are Looking For:

  • A technically credible Agile facilitator who can confidently engage in engineering discussions.
  • A servant leader who removes impediments and improves system-level delivery flow.
  • Strong analytical thinker capable of identifying root causes of delivery bottlenecks.
  • Passion for cloud engineering, DevOps, automation, and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to balance Agile agility with governance and compliance requirements.
  • Experience partnering effectively with Technical Delivery Managers in complex transformation programmes.
  • A proactive mindset focused on operational excellence and delivery predictability.
