Our team includes people from a wide range of creative and technical backgrounds, and we pride ourselves on maintaining a welcoming, inclusive workplace. Weredog is an LGBTQ+ friendly company, and many of our staff come from alternative, creative, and maker communities.
We are looking for a PHP developer with strong WordPress and WooCommerce experience to help maintain and expand our internal systems and e-commerce platform. The role covers a wide range of technical work, from developing internal systems to troubleshooting equipment when needed.
This role is fully on-site at our Bristol production facility. Remote or hybrid work is not available for this position.
About
Alongside maintaining our WooCommerce store, you will work extensively on custom internal tools used by our production and operations teams.
We have built a custom WordPress-based backend system that manages the lifecycle of our products, including production instructions, tracking and quality control logging. These tools are used daily by our team and are critical to how the company operates.
You will be responsible for maintaining and improving this system while helping us develop new tools that streamline our operations.
This role is best suited to someone who enjoys solving practical problems and building systems that people rely on every day. The work ranges from developing new features in our internal tools to helping troubleshoot technical issues across the workshop when they arise.
Who This Role Suits
This role works best for someone who enjoys being hands-on and solving a wide range of technical problems.
Some days you might be developing features for our internal systems or improving our WooCommerce store. Other days you might be helping troubleshoot an issue on the workshop floor or fixing a printer that has stopped cooperating.
We're a small team and our systems support real production work, so we value people who are practical, curious, and comfortable taking ownership of technical problems from start to finish.
Responsibilities
- Maintain and expand our custom WordPress backend plugin written in PHP
- Provide practical technical support when needed, from resolving software issues to troubleshooting equipment such as label printers or workshop systems
- Develop and improve internal tools used by the production team
- Maintain and improve our WooCommerce e-commerce platform
- Debug and resolve technical issues across our systems
- Work closely with production and operations teams to understand workflow needs
- Ensure systems remain reliable, scalable, and well documented
- Manage and organise the codebase to support future development
A cover letter is extremely important for this role.
We carefully read every cover letter and use it to understand how candidates think about problems, communicate ideas, and approach development work.
Applications without a cover letter are unlikely to be considered.
Your cover letter does not need to be long, but it should help us understand:
- your experience with WordPress or WooCommerce development
- projects or systems you have built or maintained
- why you are interested in working with Weredog
Starting wage of £16 per hour (£33,280.00 annual salary), with annual pay reviews based on performance.
Requirements
- Strong experience with PHP and WordPress development
- Experience working with WooCommerce and e-commerce systems
- Experience working with MySQL databases
- Ability to work independently and solve problems proactively
- Comfortable maintaining and improving an existing codebase
- Strong communication skills when collaborating with internal teams
- Private health insurance
- Casual dress
- Company events
- Stocked break room with drinks and food
- Employee discount
- Free on-site parking
- Sick pay
- Friendly and supportive workplace atmosphere
