Network Services Engineer
York (Hybrid – 2 days onsite) | Permanent
A leading UK FTSE 100 organisation is seeking a Network Services Engineer to support and enhance its enterprise-scale core network infrastructure across a UK wide environment. This role sits within a high performing Group IT function responsible for delivering secure, resilient, and high-availability connectivity supporting critical business operations nationwide.
You’ll be joining a technically maturing environment with modern enterprise networking technologies, within a Hybrid Cloud environment working alongside experienced engineers and external partners to maintain, optimise, and evolve the organisation’s core infrastructure landscape.
The Role
Reporting to the IT Network Services Manager, you will play a key role in maintaining the stability, performance, and security of the organisation’s core network estate. You’ll be responsible for supporting end-to-end network services across WAN, LAN, wireless, and data centre environments, ensuring connectivity is reliable, scalable, and aligned with operational and strategic business requirements.
Working closely with internal IT teams, project delivery functions, and third-party providers, you’ll assist in troubleshooting complex issues, implementing infrastructure changes, and supporting network improvement initiatives. You’ll also contribute to capacity planning, lifecycle management, and security enhancements, helping ensure the network platform remains robust, resilient, and future-ready.
This position offers strong exposure to enterprise-scale infrastructure and is well suited to a hands-on engineer who enjoys deep technical troubleshooting, continuous improvement, and working within complex production environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Support and administer enterprise WAN, LAN, WLAN, and data centre connectivity across multiple locations
- Maintain performance, availability, and security of core network infrastructure
- Act as a 3rd line escalation point for complex incidents and root cause investigations
- Monitor network health, utilisation, and capacity using enterprise monitoring tools
- Implement infrastructure changes through structured change management processes
- Manage device lifecycle including firmware updates, patching, and hardware refresh programmes
- Maintain and create accurate network diagrams, configuration records, and technical documentation
- Coordinate with carriers, vendors, and service providers to resolve issues and maintain SLA targets
- Support disaster recovery planning, testing, and resilience initiatives
- Contribute to continuous improvement and optimisation of network performance and stability
Skills & Experience
Essential
- CCNA certified
- ITIL Foundation (v3 or v4)
- 4+ years’ experience supporting enterprise core networks in multi-site environments
- Strong technical expertise across routing, switching, VLANs, VPNs, ACLs, segmentation, and network protocols
- Hands-on experience with Cisco Catalyst and Cisco Meraki solutions
- Proven experience supporting production WAN, LAN, and wireless networks
- Experience working with carriers, ISPs, and managed service providers
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills across complex network environments
- Practical experience administering enterprise firewall platforms including policy configuration, NAT, VPNs, and security controls
Desirable
- CCNP certification or working towards
- Fortinet NSE 3/4 certification
- Experience with NAC or identity-based networking technologies such Cisco ISE and Trustsec
- Experience delivering infrastructure upgrades, migrations, or transformation projects
