Position Overview
The Globe and Mail is looking for a curious and enterprising reporter for a 12-month contract covering the online culture beat.
Reporting to the life and culture editor, this role will help make sense of the ever-changing digital landscape and its impact. The scope of the beat includes: decoding online creators and social media trends; examining the economics of internet culture; digging into hot button issues like AI, privacy, security and disinformation; explaining the political movements and debates being launched and waged online; and looking at all the other ways that Big Tech and the people behind it affect our work, our identities, our attention spans, our vocabulary, our relationships and our health.
Responsibilities
- Frequently pitch compelling story ideas
- Develop sources to produce exclusive stories and features
- Write clearly and on deadline
- Work with colleagues across the wider newsroom to brainstorm story ideas as well as the best way to tell them
- At least five years experience as a reporter in a daily news organization
- Solid news judgment
- Ability to tell stories in a variety of formats
- Comfortable appearing in video and on podcasts
- Strong understanding of digital culture, Big Tech and AI
- A portfolio that shows news, enterprise and feature writing
SALARY: This position is classified as a Reporter in Group C of the Editorial Collective Agreement.
