Software Engineer (m/f/d)

Hybrid (up to 40% remote) · AI, Data & Medicine · Interdisciplinary Environment · Vienna

We are building something new: digital solutions that connect medical research and clinical practice. No legacy systems, no rigid engineering silos, but real ownership, real collaboration, and real impact.

Our team brings together expertise in statistics, bioinformatics, artificial intelligence, and clinical medicine. We are now looking for a creative, full-stack Software Engineer (both frontend- and backend-strong) who enjoys working across disciplines and wants to actively shape how software is built in a university medical environment.

Your Role

  • Design and develop modern, user-centered web applications (frontend is essential).
  • Translate complex scientific and clinical needs into intuitive digital interfaces.
  • Work closely with AI researchers, statisticians, and clinicians, acting as the technical bridge between disciplines.
  • Take ownership of architecture decisions, workflows, and technical standards.
  • Build prototypes and evolve them into robust, sustainable digital tools used in real medical contexts.
  • Contribute creatively to how digital innovation is implemented within our Division.

What We Expect

This role is not for someone who only executes tickets. We are looking for someone who is:

  • Strong in both frontend and backend (full-stack) development (modern frameworks such as React, Vue, Angular, or comparable; experienced with backend architecture such as REST API, database design, authentication, etc).
  • Creative and solution-oriented — able to think beyond standard implementations.
  • Comfortable interacting with clinicians, researchers, and non-technical colleagues.
  • Communicative and socially confident — you enjoy collaboration rather than isolated coding.
  • Motivated to build structures, not just maintain them.
  • Purpose-driven and excited to work in a medical research environment.
  • Proficient in at least one modern programming language (e.g., Python, JavaScript, TypeScript).
  • Excellent in English (spoken and written).
  • German is a plus.
  • Based in Vienna.

What Awaits You

  • Real-world impact in healthcare and medical research.
  • High creative ownership in a growing innovation initiative.
  • Direct collaboration with researchers and physicians.
  • Short decision paths and room to experiment.
  • Flexible working hours and up to 40% remote work.
  • Long-term perspective within a stable university setting.
  • Annual gross salary (40h/week): €50,000–55,000 depending on qualification and experience.

Why This Role Matters

You will not join an existing engineering department, you will help shape one. This position sits at the intersection of science and technology, where software does not just scale businesses, but advances medicine.

If you want meaningful work, intellectual exchange, and the freedom to build something purposeful, we would be very happy to hear from you.

Please send a short introduction, your CV, and links to projects or repositories you are proud of. Kindly indicate your earliest possible start date.
