This role

As a technical engineering leader within our Website team, you will partner with our Product, SEO, and Conversion squads to deliver a world-class digital experience. This role transcends traditional engineering management; we are looking for a technical leader who thrives in a high-velocity, growth-oriented environment where shipping fast and maintaining architectural integrity go hand-in-hand.

As a Technical Engineering Lead, you will

  • Drive Technical Excellence - Take full ownership of technical delivery and strategic leadership for your engineering squad
  • Own the Technical Roadmap - Develop the technical roadmap which complements the product roadmap and supports the business' growth ambitions
  • Architect Scalable Solutions - Build high-performance platforms leveraging WordPress Gutenberg, modern PHP, and JavaScript (e.g., React/Next.js)
  • Own Performance & Stability - Ensure best-in-class uptime, caching, and speed. You will align technical architecture with SEO, UX, and CRO requirements to maximize web engagement and conversion
  • Champion Continuous Improvement - Continuously evolve our engineering processes to ensure solutions are secure and scalable, prioritizing custom-built excellence over heavy reliance on external plugins
  • Drive Agentic Adoption - Set the standards and processes for the shift to agent assisted coding practices at the core of the SDLC
  • Ship It Mindset - Minimise friction and drive velocity, removing barriers and implementing tooling which allow incremental release strategies
  • Mentor & Scale Talent - Lead a high-performing squad, setting rigorous coding standards and fostering a mission-first culture through proactive mentorship, processes and methodologies which enable high-performance growth
  • Collaborate Cross-Functionally - Partner closely with Product, Design, SEO and CRO peers to bridge the gap between technical execution and impactful business outcomes

  • Technical Mastery - CMS & Frameworks
    • PHP & WordPress Expert - Proven hands-on expertise in PHP, WordPress, and the Gutenberg editor
    • Block Development - Deep understanding of JavaScript (React) and Next.js, specifically for Gutenberg block development
    • Modern Frontend - Proficiency in modern frontend technologies, including React, Vue.js, and Tailwind CSS
    • Language Frameworks - A strong understanding of frameworks such as Laravel or Symfony
    • API Design - Proficiency in RESTful API design and third-party integrations
    • Headless Architecture - Familiarity with composable architectural patterns which support scale, such as MACH
  • Engineering Standards & Architecture
    • Solid Foundations - A deep understanding of OOP, design patterns, and SOLID principles
    • Database Management - Experience with MySQL, MariaDB, or PostgreSQL, including database design and query optimization
    • Testing Rigor - Hands-on experience with unit testing and E2E testing frameworks
    • AI-First - A zealot for AI-assisted development using tools like Claude or Copilot
  • Infrastructure & DevOps
    • Version Control - Expert proficiency with Git and collaborative branching workflows
    • Deployment Pipelines - Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, Docker, and cloud deployments (specifically AWS)
    • Web Infrastructure - Exposure to hosting infrastructure, including Reverse Proxies, CDNs, and WAFs
  • Leadership & Impact
    • Growth Mindset - Never satisfied with the status quo, curious about the why behind the what and the how and obsessed with continuous improvement
    • Lead by Example - Strong problem-solving skills with a proven ability to mentor engineers and set a high bar for quality
