This role is a 6 month contract role with our client based in Melbourne CBD.
The Network Engineer Role is responsible for administering the physical and virtual networking services that underpin our clients business services. The role is BAU operational in nature but will assist a significant cloud migration project that will be occurring in 2025.This role reports to the Technology Service Office Manager.
The overall purpose of the Network Engineer is to primarily-
- Operationally administer (this is a technically hands-on role) and maintain existing networking hardware and virtualised networking appliances to meet availability, performance and security requirements.
- Upgrade and Configure existing networking hardware and virtualised networking appliances (with support from vendors as appropriate) to meet our clients availability, performance and security requirements.
- Work closely with the infrastructure team in coordinating infrastructure / application and networking activities to meet current and future (including future project) requirements.
- Uplift monitoring and alerting of networking systems and services
- Work closely with the Security teams in relation to security events / incidents and /or network security.
- Provide recommendations and guidance on all aspects of networking architecture (including but not limited to WAN / LAN / WIFI / High Availability configurations / Routing configurations / network segmentation etc)
- Work with vendors providing WAN links / network integrations
Accountabilities
- Be the lead technical expert in all areas of networking both physical and virtual, internal and WAN and cloud based.
- Operationally manage corporate network: administration, implementation, monitoring, and documenting, to maximise performance, security, and reliability to network and deliver operational goals in line with the business.
- Performing tasks such as monitoring network traffic, analysing network logs, and identifying issues.
- Monitor the performance of network and associated equipment to ensure high availably redundancy and performance.
- Configuring and maintaining various network hardware and software such as routers, switches, and firewalls to ensure network security and efficiency.
- Implementing security measures such as firewalls, VPNs, and intrusion detection systems, monitoring network activity for suspicious activity, and responding to security incidents.
- Conducting (and where vendors are involved, technically leading ) the maintenance of network and implementing network upgrade tasks such as installing new hardware or software, upgrading existing devices, or making changes to network configurations
Key Selection Criteria
- Expert Operational knowledge of physical and virtual networking administration for physical switches and virtual firewalls, virtual switches and virtual firewalls and VPNs.
- Expert Operational knowledge of cloud networking architecture, virtualization, and automation.
- Expert Operational knowledge in network performance troubleshooting, performance tuning
- Expert Operational Knowledge of network security operations including investigations and threat response.
- Knowledge of physical network design and networking concepts
- Experience with monitoring and troubleshooting complex network issues.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication skills to explain technical concepts to non-technical individuals.
- Good time management skills
- Experience with VPN solutions including SSLVPN, IPSEC, GRE Tunnels MPLS technologies
- Strong experience with HP switches and Cisco switches preferred.
- Knowledge of emerging network trends such as SDWAN , automation, DevOps, IOT AWS/Azure and associated cloud networking
- Knowledge and experience across next gen firewalls such as Netskope, Zscaler , Azure Firewall
- Managing the planning, coordination and implementation of complex network maintenance and facilitating change management processes in line with ITIL
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent industry experience
- At least one current networking related vendor Certification – Current CCNA / JNCIA / Checkpoint CCSA/CCSE
- ITIL, Azure Networking Engineer AZ-700
