Job Title: Senior Cloud Engineer

Location: Toronto, ON (3x onsite a week)

Employment Type: Contract

Pay Rate: CAD$60 - $70/HR INC

Job Description

We are looking for an experienced Senior Cloud Engineer with strong expertise in Azure and Google Cloud Platform (GCP), combined with hands‑on development experience across modern web technologies, microservices, and enterprise integration. The ideal candidate will design, build, and optimize cloud‑native applications, lead modernization initiatives, and ensure high‑quality, scalable, and secure deployments using containers, Kubernetes, and CI/CD practices.

This role requires strong technical depth, architectural thinking, and the ability to collaborate across development, DevOps, and infrastructure teams.

  • Cloud Engineering (Azure & GCP)
  • Design, deploy, and manage cloud‑native applications and services on Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform.
  • Implement cloud best practices for scalability, security, reliability, cost optimization, and automation.
  • Configure and manage cloud resources such as compute, storage, networking, IAM, monitoring, and serverless components.
  • Support cloud migration and modernization initiatives (on‑prem → cloud, monolith → microservices).
  • Application Development & Modernization
  • Build and maintain applications using:
    • React, Node.js, Angular
    • Java, Spring, Spring Boot
    • REST APIs, microservices
    • UI frameworks: Bootstrap, KnockoutJS
  • Modernize legacy applications running on:
    • IBM WebSphere Application Server
    • Liberty
    • DB2 database environments
  • Optimize application performance, scalability, and cloud compatibility.
  • Microservices & API Engineering
  • Architect and implement microservices-based systems using best practices.
  • Design REST APIs with proper security, versioning, and documentation (Swagger/OpenAPI).
  • Work with integration teams to ensure smooth inter‑system communication.
  • Containerization & Kubernetes
  • Containerize applications using Docker and deploy on Kubernetes platforms (AKS, GKE, or on‑prem clusters).
  • Manage Kubernetes components such as deployments, services, ingress, config maps, secrets, auto‑scaling, and monitoring.
  • Implement CI/CD pipelines integrating container builds, automated testing, and progressive deployments.
  • Integration & Middleware
  • Work with various integration protocols, messaging components, and enterprise connectivity patterns.
  • Integrate cloud‑native services with legacy backend systems and databases.
  • Development Tools & Governance
  • Use version control systems like Git, SVN for code management.
  • Manage builds using Gradle.
  • Document and define API contracts using Swagger.
  • Follow secure coding and cloud governance best practices.
Skills & Qualifications

Must-Have Skills :

  • Strong hands‑on experience with Azure and/or GCP cloud platforms.
  • Development experience with:
    • React, Angular, Node.js
    • Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs
    • Microservices architecture
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud container platforms.
  • Familiarity with WebSphere, Liberty, DB2, and enterprise application stacks.
  • Strong understanding of integration protocols and distributed system patterns.
  • Expertise with Git/SVN, Gradle, Swagger/OpenAPI.
Nice-to-Have

  • Experience with CI/CD tools (Azure DevOps, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Cloud Build).
  • Exposure to event-driven systems (Kafka, MQ).
  • Knowledge of cloud security standards and DevSecOps practices.
  • Performance tuning for JVM, Node.js, and database workloads.
