About the Role

We’re seeking a Software Engineer to join our client’s elite team, driving the development of a mission-critical Python/Django application supporting operational excellence in the fight against organized crime. This is a freelance opportunity for 9 months, based in Belgium, where your expertise will directly impact national and international security operations. You’ll be part of a collaborative, agile team, building solutions that matter.

Your work will ensure data integrity, streamline investigations, and enable rapid response to critical challenges — making a tangible difference in public safety and justice.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Designing, developing, and maintaining a Python/Django application to support operational and investigative needs
• Building and enhancing front-end features using React, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
• Translating complex user requirements into scalable, high-impact technical solutions
• Ensuring data quality, accuracy, and reliability across all application components
• Implementing and optimizing APIs (REST, SOAP, GraphQL) for seamless integration
• Deploying and managing applications using Docker and Docker Compose within a CI/CD pipeline
• Collaborating in an Agile environment, contributing to sprint planning, reviews, and retrospectives
• Maintaining and improving code quality through version control (Git, Github, Gitlab)
• Working partially on-site in Brussels (2 days per week), with the remainder remote
• Ensuring compliance with security accreditation requirements

Technical Skills

• Front-end: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React
• Back-end: Python, Django
• Data: Python, SQL, pandas
• API Development: REST, SOAP, GraphQL
• DevOps: Docker, Docker Compose, CI/CD
• Version Control: Git, Github, Gitlab
• Web Servers: Nginx or Apache (a plus)
• Cloud Platforms: Azure (optional)

Language Proficiency

• Professional proficiency in English
• Proficiency in one national language (Dutch or French) required
• At minimum, passive understanding of the other national language (Dutch or French)

Other Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Software Development/IT or equivalent demonstrable experience
• Proven experience in application development with Python and Django
• Experience working in Agile/Scrum teams
• Strong communication skills and a collaborative, team-oriented mindset
• Innovative thinking, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to problem-solving
• Ability to obtain security accreditation
