How do you make our customers happy?
We don’t like to brag at bol.com, but we do serve over 13 million customers, log 129 million monthly visits, and offer roughly 35 million products on our retail tech platform. Big numbers, so we need a lot of tech to keep the platform running at full speed. Tech ‘done right’ obviously makes a positive difference, but ‘tech done wrong’ poses risks. So how can we ensure IT solutions remain perfectly secure? Team up and help ‘Fort Knox’ our tools, and build actionable dashboards.
The biggest challenge
IT security and compliance are facts of life. No matter how well an application runs, and no matter how user-friendly and scalable it is, it must also be perfectly secure. That’s what our customers expect from us! At the same time, this security shouldn’t impede or inconvenience development teams more than absolutely necessary. Can you help our tech community get this right in our scalable, easy-to-use and actionable dashboards and tools? Welcome aboard!
What You’ll Do As Security Software Engineer
In this role, you will join one of our (many!) product teams and empower fellow developers to build secure applications, as effortlessly as possible. All this in a product-led setting, where each product team is part of a Fleet, and Fleets are grouped into Spaces. As for your GPS location within the bol.com universe: you’ll start in team Karma, part of the IT Security Department. Karma is responsible for facilitating IT security and compliance insights for our applications and teams. Which means your team’s efforts impact the entire developer community: 750+ tech-driven souls.
At bol.com, we are big on autonomy: it’s what makes us strong. So the role comes with a large emphasis on ownership. We invite you to come up with great, innovative ideas. How can we create more comprehensive security insights, all across our landscape? Did we miss any ‘suspicious’ areas? And how can we better inform our colleagues of the best course of action? The role comes with the mandate to develop features end-to-end, together as a team. And you get all the credit for a job well done. After all, you called the shots and made all the tough technical choices. The flip side? You also take ownership when things don’t turn out quite as planned. 😉 ‘You build it – you run it – you love it’ is our mantra, and we live it every day. How about you?
In this role, you’ll join a product team you can always rely on for constructive feedback and growth opportunities. The setting? Think ‘campus,’ including a game room and soccer field. Despite our size, we laugh at rigid rules and traditional work structures. Yes, we’re a market leader, but you won’t catch a whiff of the corporate odor you might associate with that. Our strength derives from working together as equals and constantly improving each other. Because you can accomplish great things on your own, but so much more with your colleagues! Over 25% of our IT colleagues are international, so if you need a recipe for an authentic Brazilian feijoada , or want to sample some Greek mezze, Utrecht is the place to be. It also means we have a lot of relocation experience . As for our ways of working, check out the videos . For info on current challenges (yep, we share code), check out our Techlab !
It is our responsibility to enable an environment that unleashes the power of diversity.

- Develop clean, highly performant code, and create actionable dashboards that provide teams with the usable insight
- Devise ways to scale and future-proof solutions
- Build tools and dashboards that provide engineers with actionable security insights
- Help your team grow and connect with stakeholders to ensure solutions add (in- or external) customer value
- Take full, end-to-end ownership of team efforts
- Experiment with cutting-edge technology, innovative concepts and tooling – if you have a great idea, run with it!
- Lone cowboy That’s what you are. Whether developers, business colleagues, customers, and partners can work with your code? Not your concern.
- Handheld device Autonomy and ownership are pretty scary concepts. You’d rather be led by the hand.
- Windmills and wooden shoes That’s all that springs to mind when you think of the Netherlands. A vibrant tech community? Nah.
- It all adds up Spring, Java and/or Kotlin, the Google cloud stack, and frontend applications are known terrain. A solid understanding of security and compliance-related tooling and frameworks is also a must: wow us with your knowledge!
- Pioneering mindset You’re a true coding and technology pioneer.
- Quality over quantity That’s a principle you live by. While speed is great, security always comes first.
