SNSW Grade 5/6 base salary from $90,767 to $103,729 + super

Location: Haymarket. Hybrid and flexible working arrangements including location available

Service NSW is seeking a passionate Junior Engineer to join our high‑performing Mobile Apps Team, responsible for the development, improvement, and ongoing evolution of the Service NSW mobile apps and digital credentials used by millions of customers across NSW every day.

This role is ideal for an engineer eager to grow their technical capability, work collaboratively in a modern engineering environment, and make a meaningful contribution to digital services that directly benefit the people of NSW.

About the Role

The Junior Engineer plays a key role in designing, developing, testing, and maintaining high‑quality software across mobile applications and supporting backend services. Working closely with other engineers, designers, and product teams, you will contribute to the full product lifecycle, from ideation to deployment and operational support.

You'll also help maintain efficient ICT systems and processes, respond to technical issues, and support continuous improvement across the mobile engineering domain.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of the Service NSW mobile applications (iOS/Android) and related backend systems.
  • Pair program with fellow engineers and participate in test‑driven development throughout the entire lifecycle.
  • Assist in implementing systems, processes, and technical solutions that improve performance, accessibility, user experience, and mobile capability.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve technical issues to meet service-level expectations.
  • Prepare and maintain support documentation, guidelines, and administrative processes.
  • Collaborate with team members, product managers, and designers to deliver high-quality, user‑focused digital products.
  • Provide technical advice and support to stakeholders to ensure effective use of tools, technologies, and systems.
  • Contribute to continuous service improvement initiatives and mobile app enhancements.

What You'll Need

Technical Skills & Experience

  • Understanding or demonstrated strong interest in mobile app development (React Native, iOS, and/or Android).
  • Experience with backend engineering concepts or technologies.
  • Willingness to work using pair programming and test‑driven development (TDD) 100% of the time.
  • Ability to learn, adapt, and apply new technologies in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Tertiary qualifications in software engineering, computer science, or equivalent experience.
