Engineering Manager, Wikidata Platform

This role is a pivotal leadership position responsible for managing and growing the team that develops and maintains a large-scale, high-throughput data platform. You will oversee the design, delivery, and operational excellence of the platform’s query infrastructure, ensuring reliability, scalability, and performance for millions of global users. The position combines technical leadership, strategic planning, and people management, including mentoring engineers and fostering a collaborative, inclusive culture. You will partner with cross-functional teams to prioritize work, plan roadmaps, and implement platform improvements. Operating in a fully remote and distributed environment, this role requires strong coordination across time zones and effective communication with global stakeholders. Your work will directly impact the accessibility and usability of structured data across a wide range of products and services.

Accountabilities

• Lead timely and high-quality engineering delivery for the data platform, including large-scale migrations, system updates, and performance enhancements.
• Develop and execute the technical strategy for the platform, including architecture decisions, lifecycle management, and long-term planning.
• Ensure operational excellence, reliability, security, and privacy across all platform services.
• Hire, onboard, mentor, and support the professional growth of engineers while fostering an inclusive and collaborative team culture.
• Manage planning activities, resource allocation, work estimation, and balance roadmap development with ongoing maintenance needs.
• Collaborate closely with product, SRE, and data teams to define priorities, manage dependencies, and deliver impactful solutions.
• Communicate technical plans, risks, and progress clearly to internal teams and stakeholders.
  
  

Requirements

• 5+ years of engineering management experience leading teams building API-driven or platform-level data services.
• Proven experience in delivering large-scale, high-throughput platforms or data-intensive applications.
• Strong technical foundation in observability, incident response, runbook quality, and operational excellence.
• Experience guiding software systems through full lifecycle management, including planning, deployment, and optimization.
• Excellent people management skills, including hiring, coaching, and performance evaluation.
• Experience in remote, distributed team environments and collaborating across multiple time zones.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with ability to influence cross-functional teams.
• Familiarity with data privacy and security considerations in platform services.
• Knowledge of knowledge graphs, RDF/SPARQL, or open data initiatives is a plus.
