Job Description - Roles and Responsibilities

The system/cloud engineer is responsible for the daily operational management of the ICT infrastructure and has a strong supporting role. The ICT infrastructure contains some 250 virtual servers in an on-premises data center and various applications in the public cloud Azure & AWS.

The focus of the system/cloud engineer will mainly be on the cloud aspect. In the coming years, the on-premises environment will be migrated to the public cloud.

The System/cloud Engineer works together with:

  • ICT infrastructure & operations team members, developers, BI team...
  • The Security Architect and Data Protection Officer regarding the business requirements that need to be followed regarding security and access to ICT infrastructure.
  • The service providers responsible for the operation of data centers.

Responsibilities

  • You provide new ICT infrastructure in the cloud (AWS/Azure) in coordination with architecture
  • You ensure the continuity of the operational systems by means of monitoring, logging, automation...
  • You ensure that all outstanding questions, change requests, complaints and problems in second line regarding ICT infrastructure are correctly registered and followed up.
  • You ensure the security of the servers according to the security guidelines of the organization in coordination with the security architect and within the objectives of the business around this.
  • You ensure that the documentation is always up to date in the following areas:

-> A clear description of the technical design of the ICT infrastructure and software solutions.

-> All necessary documentation and procedures to keep the ICT infrastructure operational.

  • Helps optimize the ICT infrastructure and related costs.


Privileges

The system/cloud engineer is authorized to perform all actions that are necessary within the responsibilities of the role. This includes (but is not limited to):

  • Access and administrator rights to the on-premises data center and cloud environments so that the following tasks can be performed
  • Authorized to report violations of predetermined standards to the relevant responsible person(s) and to take agreed corrective actions.

Main tasks

The main tasks of the system/cloud engineer given the responsibilities are:

  • Migrating applications and services to the relevant public cloud (AWS or Azure)
  • Programming Infastructure as Code (IaC) for deploying infrastructure components
  • Selecting cloud services to meet project requirements
  • Implementing and monitoring
  • cloud cost control tools- Developing detailed infra-designs
  • Creating the necessary documentation and making it available to colleagues
  • Installation and configuration of new servers incl. backup strategy that corresponds to the Recovery Point Objectives (RPO) of the business
  • Checking the proper functioning of backups in collaboration with the helpdesk
  • Patching existing servers and software with functional updates and security updates
  • Close cooperation with those Third-party suppliers for registering and following up on changes e.g. firewall, reverse proxy, SLL VPN, s2s-VPN.
  • Configuration of monitoring tools preferably Dynatrace so that there is a follow-up of the health of the servers and applications with a minimum of false alarms
  • Diagnostic/analysis of infrastructure & software problems if they occur by means of a Dynatrace and Azure Insights
  • Finding an effective solution to improve performance problems This may entail, among other things, the expansion of computer resources, server configuration adjustments, advice/support to the development teams. The requirements of the business are taken into account.
  • You provide support to the BI team by implementing and maintaining a Fabric environment in Azure

Skills & Experience: (Must Have)

  • Demonstrable experience as a System Administrator (setup, management, and maintenance of systems)
  • Proven experience with Dynatrace and Azure Insights
  • Proven experience with Fabric
  • Demonstrated experience with Terraform (IaC)
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience at system level of at least one specialist system (Unix/Linux/Windows, Mainframe, Middleware, Security, Network and Communication, generic or specialist systems)
  • Demonstrable extensive knowledge of cloud computing (AWS and/or Azure)
  • Language requirement: Dutch at European CEFR level C2

Additional Skills (Should Have):

  • Demonstrable experience with ICT infrastructure solutions
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience of relevant ITIL processes (especially change management)
