Job Role: Database Platform Engineer (Devops/Sre)

About the role

My client are looking for someone to take ownership of our database platforms across a modern, cloud based environment. This role sits at the intersection of engineering, platform and security, with a strong focus on performance, reliability and scalability.

You’ll be working closely with application and platform teams to ensure our data layer is robust, efficient and built to scale. This is a hands on position for someone who enjoys solving complex performance challenges and building well engineered, reliable systems.

What you’ll be doing

• Own the performance and stability of database platforms across production environments
• Drive improvements in query performance, indexing strategies and overall database efficiency
• Work with engineering teams on schema design and data modelling aligned to real workloads
• Design and maintain highly available systems, including replication, failover and backup strategies
• Define and test disaster recovery processes to ensure resilience and recovery objectives are met
• Establish and track SLIs and SLOs for database performance, availability and reliability
• Build out monitoring, alerting and observability for database health and performance
• Contribute to incident response and lead root cause analysis when issues arise
• Apply security best practices across database environments, including access control and encryption
• Automate database provisioning and operations using Infrastructure as Code and CI/CD pipelines
• Standardise configurations and practices to ensure consistency across environments

What they’re looking for

• Strong hands-on experience with SQL and/or NoSQL databases in production environments
• Solid understanding of performance tuning, query optimisation, indexing and data modelling
• Experience defining and working with SLIs/SLOs for reliability and performance
• Experience working with cloud-based database services
• Good knowledge of high availability, replication and disaster recovery approaches
• Experience with monitoring, alerting and operational metrics for data platforms
• Comfortable working with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform or similar) and CI/CD pipelines
• Familiarity with security controls such as IAM, encryption and secrets management
• Strong Linux fundamentals and scripting experience
• Ability to troubleshoot complex issues and work effectively under pressure
