Role Description (Discipline General) The Instrumentation Engineer is responsible for the design, specification and implementation of process instrumentation in the field and in automation and control rooms. Due to the high level of automation required for safe and efficient operations in refining, petrochemicals and renewable fuel production facilities, the expertise is generally essential starting from the study phases where the instrumentation engineer participates in scope clarification and feasibility assessments. During the definition phase, tasks include participation in risk analyses, technical scope definition and the preparation of the basic engineering package. During execution, tasks include produce the documents and services needed for purchasing, installation, testing, training, commissioning and maintenance. Instrumentation Engineering has a central role in selecting appropriate field devices, specifying the required instrument and valve types, design of automation and control rooms, cabling, junction boxes, loop diagrams and participates in Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) and Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) for the control systems. Description of tasks (Discipline General) • Study/Concept: Basis of Design, cabling study, preliminary control and equipment room layout, preliminary instrument index • Definition/Basic: Instrument Index, control and equipment room layout, interconnecting and wiring block diagram, design reviews • Execution/Detailed: Control room and console design, documents for procuring field instruments and control valves including purchase requests, instrument lists and data-sheets, documents for installation and commissioning including job descriptions, wiring diagrams, hook-up drawings, instrument location plans, cable lists and routing plans, junction boxes, marshalling cabinets, filed installations lists, loop diagrams, design reviews, as-builts and data handover Required skills and competencies (Discipline General) Skills and competencies include, but are not limited to: • Proficiency in process instrumentation, system integration, cabling systems, equipment types and components and control system interfaces • Strong knowledge on industrial standards, ATEX requirements, design documentation and data management in FieldALMA and in Smart plant instrumentation • Experience in site activities and troubleshooting • Understanding of process safety and risk mitigation Qualifications • B.Sc. in Instrumentation Engineering, Automation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related discipline. min. 10 years’ in instrumentation and control (I&C) engineering within industrial/process plant projects (greenfield and brownfield). • M.Sc. in Instrumentation Engineering, Automation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related discipline. min. 7 years’ in instrumentation and control (I&C) engineering within industrial/process plant projects (greenfield and brownfield). • Demonstrated Chief Design Engineer / Lead Design Engineer experience (incl. resource and team management, scope and work planning, coordination across functions & stakeholders, quality & compliance management, risk, issue and change management, communication & reporting, construction & commissioning support) • Demonstrated experience working on brownfield modification projects, including integration with existing plant assets and legacy infrastructure. • Strong working knowledge of HSE regulations, safe work practices, and risk mitigation in operational plant environments. • Proven experience leading electrical design scope across FEED, basic, and detailed engineering phases. • Strong technical expertise in: o Field instrumentation (pressure, flow, temperature, level, analyzers) o Control valves, shutdown valves, and specialty valves o Instrumentation for hazardous areas (IECEx/ATEX) o Instrument installation design, hook-ups, and routing o Safety instrumented systems (SIS), SIL rated instruments, and functional safety interfaces • Demonstrated ability to lead the instrumentation design scope within multidisciplinary project teams. • Proficiency in producing and reviewing key discipline deliverables, including: o Instrument datasheets, sizing calculations, and specifications o Instrument index, I/O lists, loop diagrams, wiring diagrams o Hook up drawings, cabling requirements, junction box design o Area classification compliance and equipment selection • Strong working knowledge of industry standards (IEC, ISA, ISO, API, EN, and local regulatory requirements). • Experience engaging with vendors, reviewing technical documentation, clarifying requirements, and ensuring correct integration of package equipment. • Demonstrated capability to coordinate closely with Process, Mechanical, Electrical, Piping/Layout, and Automation/Control disciplines. • Ability to lead design reviews, resolve clashes and technical issues, and ensure that instrumentation designs meet project specifications. • Fluency in English, with strong communication skills for presenting concepts, leading meetings, and preparing high quality documentation.
