Role: Optical Network Engineer

Employment Type: Full-time Permanent

Location: Amsterdam, Netherlands


Job Description:

  • Create HLD/LLD for deployments.
  • Perform type approvals for new HW and SW releases prior to deployments.
  • Built capacity expansions to cater for the ever-growing need for more bandwidth.
  • Maintain and upgrade the Corporate International Optical DWDM.
  • Update, manage and use effectively the NMS and capacity planning tools such as Ciena One Control and MCP.
  • Knowledge of optical systems. Optical networking technologies. Amongst Other Flex Grid, Modulation technology. Fiber technology.
  • Work within a team of engineers from different departments and vendors.
  • Support the work with consistent and detailed documentation to a high quality.
  • Change management tasks like creation and approval of changes are also part of the responsibilities of a Network Engineer. Correlating and coordinating changes from different vendors and departments, making sure changes do not overlap and impact one another before approval/rejection, and ensuring management/vendors/departments are informed.
  • Work with the NMC to ensure that the appropriate alarms are generated from the networking equipment, with the correct severity and meta information.
  • Optical network projects implementation.


Knowledge, Skills & Experience:

  • Degree in Information Technology or Computer Science/Electrical Engineering.
  • Proven experience in the optical telecom industry, with systems support, design or implementation related roles.
  • Hands on experience with Ciena optical equipment (OM6500).
  • Extensive knowledge of Optical and networking protocols.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Team player.
  • Experience in multinational and multicultural environment.


Key Measures:

  • Availability of network and connectivity can be measured by number of incidents arising from unavailability of network connectivity.
  • Performance, resiliency and stability of the network.
  • Capacity deployed.
  • Life cycle management.
  • Quality of handled incidents and changes.
  • Timely implement projects.
