Job title: Full-Stack Engineer (Backend-Heavy)

Focus: Platform Experience & Partner Ecosystem

Location: Amsterdam

Contract length: 12 months (consisting of 6 months + 6 months)

Booking.com is currently recruiting for 3 Full-Stack Engineers.

Role Overview

As a critical member of the Platform Experience team, you will be responsible for the continuous delivery of features that empower our partner ecosystem. While these are full-stack positions, the work is approximately 70% Backend and 30% Frontend.

You will lead high-stakes refactoring and maintenance of core systems—specifically the Partner Management API (PMA) and SF-Proxy—ensuring that partner data remains secure, compliant (SOX/DMA), and highly accessible across the entire organizational landscape.

We are looking for autonomous engineers who can take a well-defined task and drive it to completion independently.

Core Responsibilities

  • Mission-Critical System Evolution: * PMA Refactoring: Lead the architectural refactoring of the Partner Management API. You will ensure core partner data remains the "single source of truth" while providing secure, compliant access for all dependent systems.
  • SF-Proxy Management: Maintain the bidirectional bridge between Salesforce and PMA. You will ensure data integrity and security compliance (SOX) while syncing data between systems via direct API calls and database integrations.
  • Software Engineering Excellence: Build robust services using Java and Spring Boot on the backend, and TypeScript, Node.js, and React on the frontend.
  • End-to-End Ownership: Monitor application performance and act decisively on health metrics. You will manage the full lifecycle of services, from development to deployment, using CI/CD and experimentation frameworks.
  • Technical Incident Management: Address production issues within SLA and move beyond "quick fixes" by producing long-term solutions through Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and postmortems.
  • Architectural Guidance: Advise product teams on solutions, challenge design rationales, and help set the direction for technical capabilities by evaluating target architecture improvements.

Technical Stack

  • Backend (Primary): Java, Spring Boot.
  • Frontend: TypeScript, Node.js, React, GraphQL.
  • Legacy: Minimal exposure to Perl (no prior experience required; support is provided).
  • Integrations: Salesforce (Direct API/Database sync; no MuleSoft experience required).

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • Strong Backend Foundation: You are a Java specialist who is comfortable and willing to work across the full stack (React/TypeScript) when needed.
  • Autonomy & Leadership: Proven ability to "drive" a project or workstream independently. We value candidates who have led specific initiatives or projects within a team.
  • Refactoring Expertise: Demonstrated ability to refactor legacy codebases into modern, scalable architectures without disrupting dependent services.
  • Big Company Experience: Comfortable navigating the balance of independent work within a large-scale enterprise environment (including necessary bureaucracy and compliance standards).
  • Compliance Awareness: While you don't need to be a specialist, you should be comfortable working within SOX/DMA compliance frameworks and participating in security-related technical discussions.
  • DevOps Mindset: Comfortable with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and cloud-native monitoring tools.
  • Experience in large-scale tech environments (e.g., Booking.com or similar) is a significant plus.

Note: There is no hands-on live coding; the focus is on high-level technical discussion and project history.

Interview Process

Single Stage: A comprehensive one-hour interview covering technical depth, behavioural fit, and past experience.
