Full Stack Engineer

PathGen is building a pathogen intelligence platform to help researchers, policymakers, and public health teams make faster, better decisions about infectious disease threats. We combine genomic data, contextual information, and interactive analytics to support earlier detection, clearer interpretation, and more effective response. PathGen is being developed as a digital public good with a strong focus on Asia and global health security.

About this role

PathGen is seeking a Full Stack Engineer for a full-time hybrid role based in Singapore, with flexibility for partial remote work.

This role is for an engineer who is comfortable building across both backend and frontend systems. You will work on product features end to end, from API design and data models through to user-facing applications and interactive analytics.

What you will do

Backend:

• Design and build Python backend services, primarily using FastAPI or similar frameworks.
• Define clear API contracts, typed request and response models, and maintainable service boundaries.
• Work with PostgreSQL for application data, analytics queries, and product features.
• Build reliable async workflows and backend logic for longer-running tasks where needed.
• Improve operational quality through structured logging, pagination, input validation, and sensible safeguards.
• Ensure robust code quality via unit tests and SOLID engineering patterns
  

Frontend:

• Build and maintain React + TypeScript applications with strong typing and clean state management.
• Develop product UI for tables, filters, visualizations, and interactive analysis workflows.
• Integrate frontend applications with REST APIs and incremental or live backend responses where useful.
• Focus on usability, responsiveness, and maintainable component design.
• Use end-to-end testing for important frontend flows when making substantial UI changes.
• Debug issues across client and server boundaries and improve reliability over time.
  

Required skills:

• Strong Python experience building production backend services.
• Strong TypeScript and React experience building web applications.
• Solid SQL and PostgreSQL fundamentals.
• Experience designing and consuming APIs in production systems.
• Good engineering judgment around maintainability, correctness, and performance.
• Comfort working across the stack and taking ownership of features end to end.
• Clear communication and a pragmatic, product-oriented mindset.
• Familiarity with WebSockets or other incremental data patterns.

Nice to have:

• Experience with maps, geospatial data, or geospatial UI patterns.
• Familiarity with pgvector, vector search (RAG), or data-heavy applications.
• Experience with interactive analytics, charts, or large tabular interfaces.
• Exposure to health, biological, or bioinformatics products.
