Electricity flows with us. On behalf of Switzerland and in cooperation with international partners, we do our utmost every day to develop the best solutions for the Swiss electricity grid.
ML & Optimization Engineer - Autonomous Power Grid (80-100%) - 1539 (limited contract)
Participate in the power supply in Switzerland
Since May 2025, Swissgrid’s Balancing Energy Autopilot has been live, autonomously securing the stability of the Swiss power grid through high-performance, cost-efficient energy procurement. As the first European transmission system operator to run such a system, we’ve moved past the proof-of-concept phase – we are now in the business of continuous high-performance optimization. The Autopilot has moved beyond a single-system approach. We are now evolving the Autopilot into a holistic product family – an ecosystem of interconnected ML and Optimization modules working in sync to secure the Swiss power grid.
As an engineer in our Development & Optimization team, you take ownership of a core product within this family. You are responsible for its technical evolution, its performance in live operations, and its seamless integration into the wider system.
You take responsibility for the development of a specific ML or optimization module, balancing high-speed iteration with the high-security requirements of critical infrastructure.
We are seeking a "Builder" who is creative enough to experiment and disciplined enough to deliver production-grade results.
What We Offer
If you are interested, Charlotte De Keersmaecker will be pleased to receive your complete application documents. Please apply online via our career portal.

You take responsibility for the development of a specific ML or optimization module, balancing high-speed iteration with the high-security requirements of critical infrastructure.
- Ownership: Your work has a massive impact. We move fast, iterate in short cycles, and deploy features that have a million-euro impact on the Swiss energy system. You are responsible for the performance of your algorithm – not just writing code but tracking and optimizing the real-world gains and losses your module generates.
- Pushing Boundaries: You work on the heart of Swissgrid; Machine Learning models and optimization problems that power our autopilot. Your task isn’t just maintaining but pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in live operation.
- Ecosystem Coordination: You work in close exchange with other product engineers. Since these modules are interdependent, you ensure your optimizations align with the collective performance of the entire product family.
- Secure-by-Design Engineering: Beyond performance, you implement cybersecurity and data protection standards directly into your models. You ensure that our ML pipelines are resilient, and that data privacy is maintained in a high-security environment.
We are seeking a "Builder" who is creative enough to experiment and disciplined enough to deliver production-grade results.
- Education: University degree (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD) in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, AI, or a related field.
- Tech Skills: Strong proficiency in Python and Software Engineering is essential. You should have a solid foundation in Machine Learning and an interest in Cybersecurity/Data Protection as it relates to ML.
- Mindset: You love the speed of "vibe coding" and rapid prototyping, but you understand that in critical infrastructure, the final details must be rock solid.
- AI Passion: You are an AI enthusiast who keeps up with the latest trends and is eager to share that knowledge to enable others.
- Communication: You are comfortable coordinating with other engineers to solve complex, interdisciplinary dependencies.
- Impact-Driven: You want to see your work directly affecting the stability of a whole country’s power supply.
What We Offer
- A comprehensive look behind the scenes of the electricity industry and an understanding of its challenges, as well as in-depth insights into the development of the grid of the future
- Varied and exciting tasks within a company unique to Switzerland. Flexible working hours as part of a motivated team
- 25–30 days of holiday, as well as company holiday between Christmas and New Year
- A state-of-the-art work environment in the immediate vicinity of Aarau railway station
