Full Stack Java Developer

Overview

Profectus is seeking experienced Fullstack Java Developers to support a large agency within the Australian Government in the delivery and maintenance of modern, citizen-facing digital platforms. These roles suit developers who are passionate about building high-quality software in complex, enterprise-scale environments.

You will contribute across the full software development lifecycle, from analysis and design through to development, testing, and go-live support. Working within multidisciplinary Agile teams, you will apply your expertise to deliver well-engineered solutions that meet both functional and non-functional requirements.

Key Responsibilities

• Undertake analysis, design, development, testing, and maintenance of fullstack applications across frontend and backend layers
• Design and develop technical solutions for complex, custom, and migration-based software projects
• Build and maintain RESTful microservices and APIs that integrate with broader enterprise platforms
• Develop responsive, modern frontend interfaces as part of single-page application architectures
• Ensure high standards of code quality through peer reviews, automated testing, and adherence to agreed development methodologies
• Support CI/CD pipelines and contribute to DevOps practices including build, deployment, and configuration management
• Provide go-live and post-deployment support for released applications
• Collaborate with stakeholders, architects, and project teams to ensure effective and timely delivery of solutions
• Prepare and maintain technical documentation including design documents and progress reports
• Identify and escalate issues proactively, proposing alternative approaches where appropriate
• Stay current with ICT policies, processes, and emerging technologies, and share knowledge across the team

Required Experience

• Strong experience in Java-based backend development, including frameworks such as Spring
• At least 2 years of experience in modern frontend development, particularly with Angular and TypeScript
• Proficiency across the fullstack, including HTML/CSS, JavaScript/TypeScript, and responsive SPA development
• Experience building and consuming RESTful microservices and APIs
• Solid understanding of relational and non-relational databases
• Experience with CI/CD tooling, Git-based workflows, and DevOps practices
• Familiarity with containerisation technologies and infrastructure-as-code approaches
• Experience with automated testing practices including unit and integration testing
• Ability to work effectively within Agile teams and multidisciplinary delivery environments
• Strong communication skills with the ability to produce clear technical documentation and engage with stakeholders at all levels

Desirable Experience

• Experience working within Australian Government agencies or large-scale public sector environments
• Exposure to security-focused development practices including SAST/DAST and SecDevOps
• Experience with messaging technologies and multi-tier enterprise architectures
• Familiarity with behaviour-driven development (BDD) approaches
• Experience providing application support and maintenance in production environments
• Knowledge of systems integration and build practices within complex delivery programs

Security Requirements (Critical)

• Must be an Australian Citizen with the ability to obtain a Baseline Security Clearance
• Current Baseline Security Clearance (or higher) is preferred

Working Arrangements

• Hybrid working arrangement based in Canberra, Sydney, or Brisbane
• Expected commencement from July 2026
• Initial 12-month contract with possible extension options
