Position Overview
Speer Technologies is seeking a Network Engineer to join our infrastructure team. This is a hands-on role where you will build and maintain the networking backbone that powers our smart building and IoT products, covering everything from traditional infrastructure (routers, switches, firewalls, VPNs) to connected device communication (smart locks, building relays).
You'll join a growing engineering team alongside two existing network engineers, reporting into a lead backend engineer. The work blends hardware installations, software configurations, reliability engineering, and ongoing maintenance. You'll occasionally travel to different sites, with a hybrid schedule (3 days in office). We value engineers who communicate clearly, solve problems independently, and bring a balance of networking depth and operational reliability.
We are hiring across experience levels. Years of experience don't indicate seniority to us. If you have the fundamentals, the drive, and the curiosity to thrive in a fast-paced environment, we want to hear from you. Apply anyway!
Key Responsibilities
- Network Infrastructure: Design, configure, and manage network routes, switches, firewalls, and secure VPN connections across wired, wireless, and IoT systems.
- Device Communication: Set up and maintain communication systems for smart devices including routers, smart locks, and building relay infrastructure. Ensure secure, real-time communication channels across all connected devices.
- Site Reliability: Monitor network performance, build and manage dashboards, and resolve issues to ensure optimal uptime. Conduct routine maintenance, firmware updates, and security audits to maintain compliance and performance.
- Scaling & Architecture: Assist in scaling network architecture to support growth in smart building technologies and connected services. Participate in network planning, including performance tuning, policy development, and equipment procurement.
- Security & Compliance: Implement secure and redundant VPN configurations to support remote device access and control. Maintain visibility over all connected devices and enforce data protection measures across infrastructure.
- Documentation: Create clear and thorough documentation of network configurations, device communication protocols, and operational procedures.
- Collaboration: Work closely with engineering and infrastructure teams to implement scalable, secure network solutions. Troubleshoot device communication issues and interface with hardware teams during setup and deployment.
- Problem Solving: Navigate ambiguous, fast-moving technical challenges with creativity and sound engineering judgment. Figure things out independently; pull in help only when genuinely blocked.
Qualifications
- 2+ years of experience in networking, infrastructure, or a related field (though coachability matters more than tenure).
- Networking Protocols: Deep knowledge of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, BGP, and OSPF.
- Hardware: Hands-on experience with switches, routers, and firewalls (e.g., Cisco, Ubiquiti, Fortinet).
- Troubleshooting: Strong skills resolving routing, communication, or configuration issues.
- Experience setting up VPNs and remote access tools.
- Familiarity with securing networks that involve smart/IoT device integrations.
- Comfortable working independently on open-ended, fast-paced initiatives in a startup environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across a diverse team.
- Willingness to occasionally work overtime when the situation calls for it.
Nice to Haves
- Experience with smart building technologies and connected hardware.
- Certifications such as CCNA, CompTIA Network+, or equivalent.
- Experience working in multi-site environments or managing remote hardware deployments.
- Background in site reliability engineering (SRE) practices, monitoring, and dashboarding tools.
- Familiarity with MikroTik CHR (Cloud Hosted Router) for cloud-based routing and VPN management.
- Experience with NVR (Network Video Recorder) and LPR (License Plate Recognition) systems, particularly around integration and debugging.
- Vendor-specific smart lock certifications (Salto, ICT, HID, or Assa Abloy) relevant to building relay infrastructure.
- A natural curiosity for new networking technologies, frameworks, and emerging standards.
- Non-traditional background welcome: some of our strongest engineers transitioned into tech from entirely different careers. We care about what you can do, not where you started.
Compensation
- Total Compensation: Competitive salary with a range of $80,000-$100,000 per year, flexible for the right candidate.
- Comprehensive benefits package, including dental care, vision care, life insurance, and paid time off.
- Additional pay: Bonus pay.
- Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8-hour shifts, hybrid (3 days in office), with occasional overtime.
Why Join Speer Technologies?
- Ship From Day One: Every engineer at Speer makes an impact from their first week. This is not a place where you'll wait months to contribute.
- Growth & Ownership: Take on real responsibilities as the company scales. Your contributions are visible and valued.
- Innovation & Speed: Work in a fast-paced startup environment where no two days are the same and creative problem-solving is the norm.
- Inclusive Culture: Join a team that values diverse backgrounds, open-minded thinking, and a spirit of collaboration.
