About The Role
We’re looking for a Backend Engineering to join our team at The Dock. You’ll be part of an innovation-driven technical team helping to design, build and deliver products with the latest technologies—from early prototypes to scalable production systems.
As a backend developer, you’ll take an active role in technical hands-on work, contributing to designing, developing and maintaining robust, secure and scalable code. You’ll be responsible for owning specific technical components of a build such as APIs layers, error handling, messaging queues or authentication layers, ensuring they are consistent with the coding standards.
For this role, you must have a strong appetite for continues learning and interest in exploring technology trends and developments in your domain of expertise. Knowledge sharing and collaboration are central to this role. You’ll work closely with Designers, Product managers, Data Engineers and DevOps teams on a daily and you must be able to communicate your domain expertise to both technical and non-technical team members.
Responsibilities:
You must have a curious approach to problem solving, bringing a systems thinking mindset to the role and a strong sense of ownership.
Write clean, maintainable, well-tested and documented code.
Run code reviews for more junior team members and mentor them to become more proficient developers.
Contribute to fortnightly knowledge sharing with the wider team, presenting points of view on recent projects or technologies.
Quickly assess new technologies, design patterns or approaches and asses their feasibility for use with your given project,
Lead the continuous improvement of development processes ensuring both your own code and the code of others is maintainable and extensible.
Use AI tools to accelerate engineering tasks, automate processes and improve quality and documentation where appropriate.
Own specific technical component areas and refine the business requirements into functional and non-functional requirements.
Required experience & skills:
Proven experience developing software in agile teams, including defining and estimating work as part of sprint planning.
Strong object‑oriented programming expertise in at least two modern ecosystems (e.g. Python, Node.js, Java), with experience building enterprise‑grade APIs and microservices.
Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS or Azure), particularly serverless architectures, and implementing secure authentication and authorization solutions.
Solid understanding of distributed systems, data persistence (relational, NoSQL, and vector databases), and performance optimization considerations.
Familiarity with DevOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines, Git, Docker, and infrastructure‑as‑code technologies.
Additional Skills We Value
Exposure to/ understanding of Generative AI/Agentic technologies (LLM, MCP)
Data engineering skills on Apache Spark, Azure Data factory, Apache Kafka, Data Bricks etc
Interest in system architecture, data structures, algorithms and modern software design patterns.
