Chief Machine Learning Engineer

Danske Bank
Lithuania · Full-time · Not Applicable

Job Description

Do you want to play a central role in transforming how Danske Bank works with data, AI, and machine learning at scale?

Aligned with our Forward ’28 Group Strategy, Group Data & Analytics is building the foundation for utilising advanced data and analytics capabilities. As part of this initiative, we are assembling a team of highly skilled experts who will collaborate with business and development teams to deliver solutions that enhance data-driven decision-making across the bank.

To support this effort, we have recently established an AI & Data Science Centre of Excellence (CoE). The CoE empowers the organisation to leverage data and AI technologies to deliver measurable business value. This is not only about building things right; it is also about building the right things. In the rapidly evolving field of AI, your contribution will be vital in maintaining that balance, ensuring we solve meaningful problems and deliver tangible outcomes.

Why this role is unique

As a Chief Machine Learning (ML) Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the technical capabilities of our team. This role offers the opportunity to serve as a technical anchor, providing guidance and support to team members as they advance their expertise. You will not only build innovative solutions but also help set the technical direction, improve ways of working, and encourage knowledge sharing. Through your contributions, you will ensure our partners succeed in creating robust, scalable, and production-ready solutions.

Your challenges

In this role, you will lead the technical implementation of our critical collaborations, ensuring that models – from classical ML to GenAI – are effectively deployed and monitored. You will proactively identify and address potential technical challenges to ensure smooth project delivery.

Danske Bank is on a journey to migrate to Databricks and AWS, and you will play a key role in driving the success of this transition. By partnering with teams across the organisation, you will accelerate the impact of AI/ML initiatives by enabling teams to adopt the platform. This includes defining and promoting MLOps best practices, ensuring our delivery framework supports high-quality, real-world production standards.

You will:

  • Lead the technical delivery of AI products in collaboration with business units and cross-functional teams
  • Serve as a technical mentor, offering guidance, support, and constructive code reviews to team members looking to grow their expertise
  • Propose and implement improved ways of working to enhance team productivity, collaboration, and knowledge sharing
  • Anticipate and address technical challenges and risks to ensure smooth and timely project delivery
  • Communicate complex technical concepts clearly and effectively to non-technical stakeholders, ensuring alignment between engineering and business objectives
  • Establish and promote MLOps best practices, including CI/CD pipelines, monitoring, and quality assurance standards
  • Deploy models in both online and batch settings to deliver results via data outputs or API endpoints
  • Provide training and support to the team and collaborators, enabling them to adopt advanced MLOps practices confidently
  • Work within an agile framework, contributing to backlog refinement and prioritising technical enablers to drive effective delivery

About you:

Do you see yourself reflected in many of these statements?

  • You have effectively built and deployed AI solutions/products in "real world" production environments
  • You possess deep knowledge of MLOps and have significant experience (5+ years) in ML Engineering or related fields
  • You are technically savvy and recognised as a subject matter expert by your peers
  • You are proactive and skilled at identifying and removing technical impediments
  • You have strong communication skills and can explain technical complexity to business stakeholders
  • You have experience in developing and deploying LLM applications
  • You possess expert-level technical expertise in Python development, Spark/PySpark, SQL, public cloud platforms (preferably AWS), Databricks, FastAPI, MLFlow, monitoring frameworks (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana), containerisation (Kubernetes, Docker), and CI/CD pipelines
  • You are self-driven but deeply collaborative, aiming to elevate the entire team's performance

"We know through experience that different ideas, perspectives and backgrounds create a stronger and more creative work environment that delivers better results."

We offer:

Monthly salary range from 4960 EUR to 7440 EUR gross (based on your competencies relevant for the job).

Additionally, each Danske Bank employee receives employee benefits package which includes:
