Internship in Energy Systems Modelling and Computational optimization
INTERNSHIP 2025 NTNU - Dept. Industrial Economics and Technology Management
Position(s) for paid internship(s) for the summer 2026 in the Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management at NTNU. The position(s) will be within the domain of energy or power systems modelling, mathematical programming, AI/ML interfaces with optimization models, operations research, and/or computer science.
Job Description and Responsibilities:
The Department offers a wide range of research and industry projects that provide internship opportunities in areas such as energy system modeling, power system analysis for European countries, energy transition studies focused on the North Sea region, and the application of agentic AI for monitoring and control of smart buildings, among others. The specific internship topic will be defined jointly with the supervising team, taking into account the candidate’s background and competencies. Through collaboration with NTNU and external partners, the internship provides practical experience in applying operations research and data analytics to real-world challenges in sustainable energy, while developing skills in teamwork, scientific communication, and innovative problem-solving within the context of the ongoing energy transition.
Below are the desired skills and responsibilities. Experience in at least one or two of them will be important to carry on a successful internship:
• Implementation and development of optimization models (e.g. LP, MILP, SP)
• Collaboration on developing energy systems models (e.g., EMPIRE, PyPsa, etc.) with external partners (e.g, SINTEF)
• Programing interfaces and experience in Python or Julia
• Implementation of artificial intelligence solutions
• Development of Cloud Computing, HPC and APIs
• Knowledge and experience with stochastic programming is beneficial
• Knowledge about the electricity market or power systems
Requirements:
• Skill in at least one or two (ideally) of the mentioned skills above
• Ideally completed 1st year of the Master degree
• Excellent teamwork and communication skills
• English proficiency
• Working Place (in-Person): NTNU main campus, Trondheim, Norway
• Internship length: 2.5 to 3 months (start early June 2026)
Note that the internship position(s) has the option of developing into a master's thesis in the following semesters.
