Internship – AI/ML Based Text Analytics for Knowledge Management

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
Austria · Full-time · Mid-Senior

Duration

12 months

Internships

The IAEA accepts a limited number of interns each year. The internships are awarded to persons studying towards a university degree or who have recently received a degree (see Internship web pages for further details).

The Purpose Of The Programme Is

  • To provide interns with the opportunity to gain practical work experience in line with their studies or interests, and expose them to the work of the IAEA and the United Nations as a whole;
  • To benefit the IAEA's programmes through the assistance of qualified students specialized in various professional fields.

The duration of an internship is normally not less than three months and not more than one year.

Organizational Setting

The Department of Nuclear Safety and Security (NS) formulates and implements the IAEA's nuclear safety and security programme, which encompasses the IAEA's activities to protect people and the environment from radiation exposure, and responds to the needs of its Member States related to nuclear safety and nuclear security.

The Division of Radiation, Transport and Waste Safety develops and maintains standards for radiation protection, radioactive waste safety, and safety in the transport of radioactive material that enable the beneficial uses of radiation to be used while ensuring appropriate protection of workers, the public and patients. It also assists Member States in the implementation of these standards and provides related services.

The Regulatory Infrastructure and Transport Safety Section (RIT) is responsible for providing Member States with safety standards, guidance and tools to foster regulatory infrastructures for the control of radiation sources, safe transport of radioactive material and capacity building in radiation transport and waste safety. It also manages information to identify the status, progress and needs of Member States with a view to improving their radiation, transport and waste safety.

The Technical Assistance and Information Management Unit is responsible for maintaining an overview of the overall radiation safety situation in Member States receiving IAEA assistance. This aids the IAEA in general, and the Division in particular, in identifying the needs and priorities of Member States receiving IAEA assistance and in assessing the outcomes of IAEA supporting activities for these countries. The Unit is also responsible for managing the Division's information systems. In addition, the unit is responsible for coordinating with the Technical Cooperation Department for the Division and coordinating the divisional capacity building programme. The Unit is also involved in implementation in some of the aforementioned activities.

Main Purpose

The purpose of this internship is to contribute to division‑level initiatives on the deployment of AI‑based text analytics pipelines for process improvement and knowledge management, while gaining practical work experience in an international environment.

In particular, the intern will support the integration of Python‑based natural language processing (NLP) methods into front‑end applications and contribute to improving document‑flow processes, including through the use of cloud platforms such as Azure for the secure and scalable deployment of AI services (e.g. LLMs, vectorization and data storage).

Functions / Key Results Expected

  • AI Text Analytics and NLP - Support the development and testing of AI based workflows for processing technical and safety documents, including semantic retrieval, summarization, classification, and basic validation of large language model (LLM) outputs under guidance from senior staff.
  • Front End Integration - Assist in implementing frontend components that allow users to interact with AI processed documents, contributing to user interface development and ensuring smooth interaction with backend services.
  • Cloud Deployment and Operations - Contribute to the deployment and operation of AI services in a cloud environment (Azure preferred), including assisting with document ingestion pipelines, configuration tasks, and basic monitoring activities.
  • Process Improvement and Knowledge Management - Support the application of AI methods to improve document based workflows and contribute to knowledge management solutions that facilitate the review of large and complex technical materials.

It is not expected that an intern will possess all of this knowledge and these skills; however, a strong willingness to learn them during the internship at the Agency is considered an asset.

Qualifications And Experience

  • University Degree in, or currently studying, Information Technology, Computer Science, Data Science, Nuclear Engineering, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience through a university ‑ level project portfolio in relevant areas is considered an asset.
  • Excellent written and spoken English is essential; knowledge of any other IAEA official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) is considered an asset

Applicant Eligibility

  • Candidates must be a minimum of 20 years of age and have completed at least three years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a first degree.
  • Candidates may apply up to one year after the completion of a bachelor's, master's or doctorate degree.
  • Candidates must not have previously participated in the IAEA's internship programme.
  • Good written and spoken English essential; fluency in any other IAEA official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish or Russian) an asset.
  • Candidates must attach two signed letters of recommendation to their application.
