We are seeking a highly motivated Research Scientist to lead research on next-generation, high-capacity lithium-ion-batteries anode structures. The project entails fabricating nanogranules of Si that are coated with carbon or Si/C, followed by MXenes addition to enhance long-range conductivity of the anode. Comprehensive comparison of the performance of Si/C and Si/C/MXene anodes in LIBs will be carried out. Project also addresses environmental and cost concerns by utilizing Si particles from recycled solar panels and rejected Si wafers. The Research Scientist will focus on the design, fabrication, characterization, of the anode structures and then on the assembly of half-cell and full-cell modules and testing them. Characterization techniques includes: cyclic voltammetry, impedance spectroscopy to evaluate charge transfer, ion diffusion, and interface stability, cyclic stability, charge/discharge capacity and rate performance and will provide comparative interpretation of the electrochemical performance between the two electrode systems.


This work is expected to contribute to a transformative class of low-cost, high-performance LIB anodes for a reliable and high-capacity battery systems serving the ever-evolving electric vehicles industry and ecosystem.


The position offers an opportunity to work at the intersection of materials science, device physics, electrochemistry, and LIB-energy storage systems, with strong potential for high-impact publications and technology transition and further funding opportunities.


  • PhD in chemistry, physics, materials science, electrical engineering or a closely related field
  • Proven experience with lithium-ion battery systems.
  • Hands-on expertise in materials processing and characterization techniques, and device assembly and experimental testing.
  • Familiarity with various anode structures including Si-based anodes.
  • Familiarity with C-coating techniques including CVD, ALD, dry coating, sonicating in wet-reservoirs. Strong publication record and excellent written and verbal communication skills include the ability to contribute future grant proposals.
  • PhD gained from and/or experience working in a top 200 QS or THE ranked University
  • Experience with wet-chemical processes, electrochemistry and battery systems, particularly LIB.
  • Track-record of leadership, innovation and successfully accomplishing research tasks in projects
