Cyber Security Specialist

Profectus is seeking Expressions of Interest from Cyber Security Specialists to support anticipated opportunities across multiple Australian Government departments and the broader national security community. These roles are expected to contribute to the protection, monitoring, and continuous improvement of cyber security capabilities within secure enterprise and classified environments. Opportunities are most likely to be Canberra-based, with potential requirements emerging across other locations and jurisdictions nationally.

Key Responsibilities

• Contribute to cyber security operations, monitoring, and active defensive activities within secure enterprise and classified environments
• Analyse security events, logs, and alerts across PROTECTED and higher classified networks to identify anomalous or malicious activity
• Support incident response, investigation, and remediation activities aligned to Commonwealth and ASD reporting obligations
• Assist in the development and enhancement of detection use cases and security monitoring capabilities for mission-critical systems
• Contribute to threat hunting and proactive security activities informed by Commonwealth and partner threat intelligence
• Support development and maintenance of operational procedures, playbooks, runbooks, and SyOPs documentation
• Collaborate with internal cyber teams, threat intelligence functions, infrastructure, and engineering groups
• Assist in continuous improvement of cyber security posture, controls, and processes aligned to Essential Eight and the ISM
• Contribute to reporting, documentation, and communication of cyber risks and incidents to government stakeholders

Required Experience

• Experience working within cyber security, security operations, or related ICT roles
• Exposure to security monitoring, incident response, or threat detection activities
• Ability to analyse logs and security events across enterprise and/or classified systems
• Experience working within structured or regulated environments (government, national security, intelligence, or critical infrastructure)
• Strong communication skills, including the ability to document and communicate technical information clearly to government stakeholders
• Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams of APS, uniformed and Industry personnel

Desirable Experience

• Experience supporting Australian Government, national security, or intelligence community customers
• Hands-on experience with SIEM and SOAR platforms (e.g. Splunk, Microsoft Sentinel, or similar)
• Familiarity with Microsoft security tooling (Defender suite, Entra, secure cloud platforms)
• Exposure to threat intelligence, threat hunting, and adversary emulation methodologies
• Experience developing detection use cases or playbooks aligned to MITRE ATT&CK
• Working knowledge of the ISM, Essential Eight, PSPF, and ASD cyber security guidance
• Relevant tertiary qualifications or industry certifications

Certifications (Highly Regarded)

• CompTIA Security+ or equivalent
• Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)
• GIAC certifications (e.g. GCIH, GCIA, GCFA, GDAT)
• Microsoft Security or Cloud certifications (SC-200, AZ-500)
• Splunk certifications or equivalent SIEM credentials

Security Requirements

• Must be an Australian Citizen
• Must have the ability to obtain a Negative Vetting Level 1 (NV1) clearance

Working Arrangements

• Predominantly Canberra-based roles within secure Australian Government environments
• Onsite work is expected for most opportunities, including engagement on classified networks
