Senior Machine Learning Engineer (AI Training)

About The Role

What if your deep expertise in machine learning could directly shape how the world's most advanced AI systems reason, plan, and solve problems? We're looking for Senior Machine Learning Engineers to author the high-fidelity reasoning traces that teach large language models how to think — step by step, decision by decision.

This isn't a typical ML role. You won't be tuning hyperparameters or managing infrastructure. Instead, you'll be doing something arguably more important: capturing the architecture of expert reasoning in a form that makes AI smarter, more reliable, and more capable in the real world.

This is a fully remote, flexible contract role built for senior practitioners who want meaningful, high-impact work on their own schedule.

  • Organization: Alignerr
  • Type: Hourly Contract
  • Location: Remote
  • Commitment: 10–40 hours/week

What You'll Do

  • Author complex, high-fidelity reasoning traces for sophisticated technical ML tasks — showing exactly how an expert thinks through and solves real problems
  • Document structured decision-making processes that capture planning, tool selection, and step-by-step execution in a format LLMs can learn from
  • Design and apply data strategies that help AI navigate intricate, real-world reasoning scenarios reliably
  • Review and provide expert-level feedback on reasoning traces produced by other contributors to ensure quality, logical coherence, and practical accuracy
  • Work across a range of advanced ML topics — model evaluation, architecture decisions, feature engineering, and beyond

Who You Are

  • Experienced ML practitioner with significant hands-on experience in machine learning, deep learning, or a closely related technical field
  • Skilled at decomposing complex, ambiguous problems into clear, structured, and logically sound steps
  • Familiar with advanced LLM evaluation and training methodologies — you understand how these models learn and where they go wrong
  • A precise, articulate communicator who can document technical reasoning with clarity and depth
  • Self-directed and consistent — you produce high-quality work without needing close oversight

Nice to Have

  • Prior experience in data annotation, data quality assurance, or AI evaluation systems
  • Top-tier Kaggle competition results (Grandmaster or Master level) demonstrating elite-level model understanding and feature engineering
  • Familiarity with RLHF, chain-of-thought prompting, or reasoning trace methodologies
  • Background in AI safety, interpretability, or model alignment research

Why Join Us

  • Work directly with teams building some of the world's most advanced AI systems
  • Fully remote and async — work when and where it suits you, with no fixed schedule
  • Freelance autonomy: choose your hours, set your pace, maintain your independence
  • Get rare, hands-on exposure to how frontier LLMs are actually trained and improved
  • Contribute to work that has a genuine, lasting impact on the trajectory of AI development
  • Potential for ongoing contract extension as new projects launch
