About Your Role as a Senior Java Backend Developer
You will join one of eight Java Scrum teams. You’ll work closely with a lead architect, four Java developers (junior to senior), two testers, and a product owner. Within this team you develop applications in the domain of GIS, data visualization, and modern backend-driven solutions.
Your main focus will be backend development in Java / Spring Boot. Frontend work in Angular exists within the team, but only to a limited extent and mainly where needed to support the end-to-end development process.
You play an important role within the team: technically strong in Java, able to guide colleagues, and committed to raising the quality of the codebase and engineering standards.
Responsibilities
- Designing and developing Java backend software within an Agile Scrum team
- Building scalable and maintainable services using Spring Boot
- Contributing to architecture together with the Lead Architect
- Improving code quality, maintainability, and engineering practices
- Pair programming with colleagues and coaching less experienced developers
- Occasionally contributing to Angular-based frontend components when needed
Technical Environment
You will work in a modern backend-focused environment:
- Java (currently including Java 18, transitioning to Java 21)
- Spring Boot
- REST APIs & microservices
- Docker & Kubernetes
- Containerization & cloud-native development
- Angular (limited usage within the role)
What You Can Expect from the Organization
You will join a software and engineering organization (~120 FTE) that plays a central role in a complex national information chain. The applications directly relate to tangible logistical infrastructure — not administrative or financial systems, but software that truly impacts society.
All teams are responsible for their own product or application. Teams operate independently within their domain, while collaborating closely across the department. Knowledge sharing is deeply embedded in the culture through internal communities, hackathons, demos, guilds, and technical sessions.
- Informal, open culture with a strong work-life balance
- Professionals with passion for their craft
- Plenty of room for personal development
The Extras from Your Career Partner
As a career partner, we go beyond finding the right workplace. We offer several opportunities for personal and professional growth. For example, you can work with a career coach (yes — that’s me) and make use of our personal development platform DEVELAB, including:
Personal guidance | Training budget | DISC / Insights analysis | Career values assessment | Competency testing | Workshops & training | DEVELAB events | Lifestyle coaching
What You Bring
- HBO/WO degree (e.g. Computer Science or Software Engineering)
- Minimum 7 years of experience as a Java backend developer
- Strong experience with Spring Boot
- Experience with Docker; Kubernetes knowledge is a plus
- Experience working in modern Agile development environments
- Experience mentoring or coaching colleagues is a plus
- Basic knowledge of Angular is sufficient
- Basic knowledge of the Dutch language is a plus
If you enjoy shaping technical direction, building high-quality backend systems, and mentoring developers within a modern engineering environment, then this role could be a great fit for you.
