Java Developer – Payments Engineering

We’re looking for a Java Developer to join our Payments Engineering team, working on the transition to ISO 20022. A lot of the work sits in the space most people avoid: legacy systems, complex logic, and time-sensitive change. If you like figuring things out, you’ll enjoy it here.

You’ll be part of a small team of experienced engineers, working closely together to deliver changes that actually matter.

What you’ll be doing

• Work directly with business users to understand what’s needed (and what’s not)
• Break down and analyse existing systems that don’t always explain themselves
• Design and implement changes that are reliable, testable, and fit for purpose
• Take part in code reviews, releases, and UAT
• Improve the codebase where you can—not just make it “work”

What we’re looking for

• 4+ years building backend systems
• Strong Java experience, plus:
• Spring Boot
• Hibernate
• DB2
• REST APIs
• Kafka (producers/consumers, streams)
• MongoDB
• Maven
• Docker
• Experience with microservices or distributed systems
• Comfortable with Git and CI/CD pipelines
• A degree in a technical field (or equivalent experience)

Nice to have

• IBM MQ / JMS
• Infrastructure as Code
• ISO 20022, SWIFT, or similar
• Python
• Experience in payments or financial systems
