About The Position
The Department of Technology Systems (ITS) at the University of Oslo (UiO) invites applications for
an Associate Professor position in Systems Science and Engineering. We are seeking a visionary researcher and educator to join our dynamic and collaborative academic environment, focused on applied science and technology. We are particularly interested in candidates with a diversity of experiences and perspectives.

Our main activities span five interconnected and rapidly evolving research domains, namely: Cybernetics and Autonomous Systems, Space Systems, Security of Cyber‑Physical Systems, Renewable Energy Systems, and Healthcare Technology, which offer a rich and vibrant environment for system-focused science and education. If you are a successful candidate, we expect you to contribute to advancing interdisciplinary systems-level approaches to complex technological, environmental, and social challenges. If your scientific background and research naturally interface with two or more of these areas, you are especially encouraged to apply.
We seek applicants whose scientific interests and activities address both fundamental and applied aspects of complex systems, integrated multi-scale systems, systems of systems and/or systems-level design and analytics. At the same time, it is important that you demonstrate experience and interest in cross-disciplinary research and present ability to combine technology and engineering with systems science, data analytics, sustainability, security, social and/or policy dimensions.
You must document academic qualifications equivalent to an Associate Professor position. As a successful applicant you must be able to teach at all levels as well as supervise Master students and PhD Research Fellows.
You may furthermore be required to take on other teaching duties and administrative tasks, by request from the Department or the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

- Priority areas include, but are not limited to:
- Multi-scale engineered and integrated technology systems within energy, cybernetics, robotics, space, and/or healthcare, including smart and critical infrastructures
- Systems life cycle processes and methods spanning concept development, implementation, and operations, with emphasis on system‑of‑systems assessment and sustainable operational practices
- Modeling and simulation of complex, integrated, and multi‑domain systems using mathematical, computational, and data‑driven approaches
- Analytical methods for decision‑making in complex systems, covering uncertainty, risk, optimization, and control
- Develop and carry out an ambitious, interdisciplinary research activities in systems science and engineering, in connection to the domains already developed and studied at ITS
- Build and strengthen interdisciplinary systems research at ITS with both academic and non-academic collaborators and actors
- Contribute to the development of curriculum in complex systems, systems thinking, systems architecture and design, sustainable systems engineering, etc.
- Contribute, through the curriculum development and teaching, to the implementation of the international bachelor’s degree program at ITS, offered from autumn 2027
- Teach undergraduate and graduate interdisciplinary courses in systems science and engineering, and provide supervision at both master’s and PhD’s levels
- Secure external fundings to support your research and educational activities

- Completed PhD degree in Systems Engineering, Applied Systems Science/Theory or in other relevant technology system-focused domains
- A demonstrated ability or clear motivation to engage in cross-disciplinary research
- A strong scientific track record that combines technology/engineering with systems science, data analytics, sustainability, social and/or policy dimensions.
- Documented (potential for) acquisition of external funding
- Pedagogical qualifications as well as teaching and supervision experience at all levels
