About us

The NSW Police Force (NSWPF) is one of the largest police forces in the western world, with more than 20,000 employees, including more than 4,000 administrative employees who support the sworn officers that provide a range of law and order services 24 hours a day, seven days a week to the socially, geographically and culturally diverse community of NSW.

About the role

We have an opportunity for an Application Developer to be part of our Data Science Team, Technology and Communication Services Command. The Application Developer contributes to the development, implementation and support of software, web, and multi-media applications that facilitates the achievement of business outcomes and improves business efficiencies and processes through leveraging technology.

This role is positioned within the NSWPF Chief Data Office’s Data Science team. For this role, the most valuable experience is hands-on development of data science applications – not just building models but integrating them into systems that users rely on. A deep understanding of Python, SQL and modern applications such as Streamlit are essential. Experience or formal education in statistical models, machine learning and forecasting is also mandatory. Experience supporting deployed solutions – debugging, monitoring, maintaining and code governance – is highly desired.

Preferred relevant certifications or experience

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (data science, mathematics, physics etc.) with 2+ years’ experience, or 5+ years industry experience preferred.

What differentiates a successful candidate?

The preferred candidate will be someone who combines rigorous statistical thinking with practical user-centric application design. They don’t just build models, they engage with clients, understand their problems and provide solutions that meet their needs and capabilities. The ideal candidate communicates clearly to a varied audience, documents thoroughly and collaborates well with both technical and non-technical teams.
