We are now looking for

University trainee (yliopistoharjoittelija)

for a fixed term, 2-month position.

We are offering a university trainee position to a software engineering and AI master’s student to conduct their advanced practical training in the “Serious games for sustainable energy: Digital solutions to empower citizens to contribute to a just transition” – project, funded by the 6GESS New Research Initiative. This project is realized in collaboration of the Faculty of Technology (FTech), Water, Energy and Environmental Engineering Research Unit (WE3) and the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (ITEE), the Empirical Software Engineering in Software, Systems, and Services (M3S) unit.

You will mainly work in the M3S unit. The M3S research unit is focusing on the fundamental areas of Software Engineering Methods and Processes. Research covers the entire professional software lifecycle, including technical and human aspects. Our work utilizes and develops cutting-edge technologies such as IoT, 5G/6G, AI and digital twins.

The project aims at developing a digital solution for demand-side management that empowers residential consumers to participate in the energy transition. The idea is to conceptualize a mobile app that will give the user personalized suggestions of how to adjust their electricity consumption to reduce their environmental impacts. The app will access 24-h predictions of electricity’s carbon intensity, as well as domestic and renewable content from the https://sahkojalki.fi/ platform. The contribution of the trainee should be to develop an AI-assisted feedback system that provides the personalized recommendations, based on the user’s personal preferences, their specific energy consumption habits and environmental predictions from Sähköjälki API.

Who are you?

The position is only available for students at the University of Oulu, and aimed at Master's students in the Software Engineering and Information Systems Programme or a closely related degree programme. Priority will be given to students in the Artificial Intelligence study orientation. The traineeship must be part of your studies.

In order to succeed in the position, we require from you:

• Fluent in written and spoken English
• Technical skills required in:
• LLM agent development: Hands-on experience building agentic LLM workflows with OpenAI, Gemini, or other LLM models
• Web development: Proficiency with Next.js (or equivalent React-based stack) to build accessible, user-friendly web user interfaces
• Scheduled automation: Experience with backend cron job scheduling or third-party automation platforms, e.g. for triggering time-based alerts
• RAG implementation: Practical experience building Retrieval-Augmented Generation systems
• User authentication: Experience implementing secure user login/auth systems (e.g. OAuth/JWT)

• Finnish language skills, but not required

Salary

The position is fixed term for 2 month on a full-time basis and should be completed between 22.6.2026 and 31.12.2026.

A university trainee's salary for internships at the University of Oulu is fixed, and it is 1687,47 €/month.

Trial period in accordance with the collective agreement of the Finnish universities is applied to the position.
