Role Overview

Nexxis is Barco’s platform dedicated to revolutionizing the digital operating room. It connects surgical teams, medical devices, and imaging systems into one integrated ecosystem, helping clinicians collaborate more efficiently and make better decisions during procedures. Our platform is evolving from traditional AVoIP switching into a next-generation, application-driven orchestration system, where smart surgical displays, devices, and software work seamlessly together.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will help shape the future of the Nexxis platform by designing and building scalable, application-centric systems for the digital operating room. You will play a key role in evolving architecture, improving engineering practices, and delivering features that directly enhance how surgical teams operate.

What You’ll Do

  • Architecture & Platform Development: Drive and evolve the Nexxis NMS server architecture toward application-centric orchestration while strengthening testing, automation, and security-by-design
  • Product & Feature Development: Design, build, and evolve our Kotlin/Spring Boot services and GraphQL/REST APIs; contribute to essential Vue based user flows
  • Engineering Excellence: Extend Nexxis NMS to discover, provision, monitor, and update applications and smart surgical displays
  • Medical & Regulatory Context: Contribute to the Technical File for the Nexxis medical device (requirements/design inputs and outputs, verification evidence, risk-related items, traceability)
  • Collaborative leadership: Collaborate closely with Product Management, Quality Assurance, User Experience Design, and the other Nexxis engineering teams; coach and unblock peers through design reviews and hands-on pairing

Required Core Technical Skills

  • Kotlin/Java, Spring Boot; strong object-oriented design and design patterns
  • GraphQL (must-have) and REST API design and evolution
  • Vue JavaScript for front-end contributions
  • SQL and messaging / event-driven patterns
  • CI/CD, automated testing (unit, system testing), Jenkins, Docker/containers
  • Security fundamentals
  • Networking for AVoIP: multicast, IGMP, VLAN

Nice to have

  • GPU / accelerated computing (for example, NVIDIA IGX, Holoscan) and integration of AI inference pipelines
  • Interest in Agentic Engineering practices
  • Experience with Cloud software (AWS, Azure.)

Profile

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s in Computer Science/Engineering (or equivalent) with 6+ years in software engineering
  • Clear communicator, collaborative, and strong problem solver; comfortable shaping technical direction through hands-on delivery
  • Habit of continuous learning: quickly dives into and masters diverse frameworks, languages, and tools beyond the stacks above; selects technology pragmatically for the problem at hand and actively shares learnings
  • Interest in developing software under medical-device standards (for example, IEC 62304/ISO 13485 principles with risk-aware documentation and traceability)
  • Experience with Scrum/Agile development practices (backlog refinement, sprint reviews, iterative delivery, and team retrospectives)
