To monitor and coordinate safety risks to protect the university from potential health and safety exposures that would adversely affect its operations, and ensure all activities comply with relevant safety regulations and best practices.
Key Result Areas:
- Monitor, analyse, and interpret environmental, health, and safety regulations to ensure compliance and adaptation to regulatory changes
- Collaborate with lab managers, facilities team, HSE focal points, and other stakeholders to integrate safety practices into daily operations
- Conduct safety inspections, laboratory audits, and fire risk assessments, and prepare detailed reports to communicate findings and recommendations to management, ensuring compliance with international (OSHA, ANSI, EPA and NFPA), local (QCD, MME) and university regulations and standards
- Maintain and update the HSE risk database to ensure accurate tracking and proactive management of health, safety, and environmental risks across the university
- Plan, coordinate, and implement special projects in risk management and safety to address emerging challenges and enhance safety protocols
- Participate in developing and implementing laboratory chemical hygiene plans, prepare standard operating procedures and communicates these to campus visitors
- Advise the university community on chemical safety protocols and procedures to ensure compliance with local, international, and best practice standards (e.g. OSHA, EPA, QCD)
- Conduct thorough HSE risk assessments of university processes and activities, regularly review and update these assessments to identify potential hazards and develop effective mitigation strategies
- Design and implement training programs for faculty, staff, and students on chemical hygiene, environmental protection, risk management, hazard identification, regulatory compliance, safe work practices, and hazardous materials management in accordance with the laboratory standard and chemical hygiene plan
- Investigate workplace accidents, injuries, and near-misses promptly to determine their root causes, prepare comprehensive incident reports, and detail findings, conclusions, and recommendations for corrective actions, followed by monitoring their implementation
- Maintain accurate, and up-to-date records of all safety-related activities to support compliance and continuous improvement
- Prepare reports and documentation for internal and external stakeholders to ensure transparency and accountability in safety practices
Minimum Knowledge, Skills & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, Chemical or Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
- 6-8 years of relevant full-time work experience in an environmental, health, and safety role, with a solid understanding of the academic research environment and culture.
- Professional certifications (e.g., Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Health Physicist (CHP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), NEBOSH IGC, CHST, PMP, or similar) are preferred.
- Technical proficiency in HSE risk management, loss control principles and practices, chemical hygiene, environmental sustainability, emergency response, and conducting risk assessments, audits, and compliance reporting.
- In-depth knowledge of environmental and safety regulations, including OSHA, EPA, IOSH, NFPA, CDC, FEMA, DOT, and Qatar Environmental law.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent writing skills with the ability to draft and edit a variety of written reports and communications and to articulate ideas clearly and concisely; Arabic proficiency is an advantage.
