About the Role

We're scaling the AI Practice using a city-based squad model. The Sydney AI Engineer is the technical lead for client builds — the person making architecture decisions, choosing the stack, and taking systems from prototype to production.

You'll partner with the Sydney AI PM and AI Data Engineer to deliver as a complete team, reporting to the Partner, AI Practice for technical leadership and standards.

What You'll Do

• Build AI-enabled products and agents — owning the full journey from prototype to production for client engagements.
• Make the architecture calls — model selection, orchestration framework, evaluation strategy, deployment pattern.
• Translate business problems — into technical solutions in collaboration with PMs and clients.
• Build evaluation frameworks — accuracy, bias, cost, latency, hallucination — so success is measured rigorously, not asserted.
• Set the technical bar — pair, review and unblock other engineers and data engineers in the squad.
• Work AI-augmented — CI/CD, testing, monitoring and cost awareness; AI tooling as your default, rigour where it counts.
• Contribute to the practice — internal T&G AI tooling and the IP we build across squads.
• Step into client conversations — diagnostics, architecture reviews and governance discussions when technical credibility matters.

You'll Be Successful If You…

• You have 5+ years in software engineering, with at least 2 years shipping AI-enabled products or systems into production.
• You've built agentic systems — and can walk through the architecture, tools, models and outcome.
• You're strong in Python and at least one of TypeScript / Go / Rust / Java.
• You're hands-on with the modern AI stack: LLM orchestration (LangChain, LlamaIndex or equivalent), vector databases, evaluation tooling, RAG and MLOps fundamentals.
• You have cloud fluency in AWS, Azure or GCP — including AI services.
• You use Cursor, Claude Code, Copilot or equivalent as default and know when rigour is non-negotiable.
• You can explain technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders without losing accuracy.
• You have the right to work in Australia.

What Success Looks Like

• AI systems delivered for clients with measurable outcomes — accuracy, deflection rate, automation, cost reduction.
• Sydney squad's technical practices matching or beating the rest of the practice on quality, velocity and cost.
• Reusable components contributed to the internal Think & Grow AI platform.
• Representing the practice technically in client conversations and at events.

This Role Might Not Be for You If…

• You prefer research or experimentation over production delivery.
• You avoid client-facing situations — this role needs technical credibility in the room.
• You don't verify the code you ship — rigour is non-negotiable here.
• You prefer working in isolation over a tight, collaborative squad.
